USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Five members of the Air Force men's gymnastics team claimed individual national titles this afternoon (March 21), as the 10th-ranked Falcons wrapped up a successful weekend of competition at the 2015 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships at the Academy's Cadet West Gym.
Senior Josh Ramos claimed the third USAG national title of career, while junior Denis Aurelius earned his second such award. Ramos, who won the parallel bars as a freshman and junior, added the USAG floor exercise title to his resume this year, when he scored a career-best matching mark of 15.100 to win that event. Aurelius, who won the floor exercise as a sophomore, easily won the still rings title this year, scoring a career-best 15.400 (eighth-highest score in Academy history) to better the field by 0.600.
With today's titles, Ramos and Aurelius become just the third and fourth gymnasts in Academy history to earn USAG national titles on multiple events.
Senior Greg Chaput, junior Josh Pyne and sophomore Tim Wang earned their first gold medals at the USAG Championship meet. Chaput scored a 14.650 to win the parallel bars and give the Falcons' four of the last five individual titles on that event. Pyne tallied the second-highest vault score of his career (14.700) for the program's first award on that event since 2012, while Wang scored a 15.000 to capture the program's third-straight title on the pommel horse.
William and Mary's Michael Dietz captured the USAG title on the high bar (14.600).
By finishing within the top-six of their respective events this afternoon, the Falcons combined for 11 USAG All-America awards - a single-meet mark that is tied for the most in Academy history.
Ramos led the way with three USAG accolades - the most by an Air Force gymnast in one championship meet since 2011. In addition to his victory on the floor exercise, Ramos also finished second on the parallel bars (14.600) and fourth on the high bar (14.400).
Freshman Fletcher Braunton picked up his first USAG award after helping the Falcons to a sweep of the top-two finishes on the still rings behind a runner-up score of 14.800, while classmate Arinn Wade earned his first award following a fourth-place tie on the pommel horse (14.450). Sophomores Aaron Nubine and Chase Cannon also collected their first USAG All-America accolades with top-six placements on the floor exercise (14.300, fifth) and vault (14.000, sixth), respectively.
The Falcons remain at the Academy next weekend (March 28), when they host the 2015 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the Academy's Cadet West Gym. The meet, which will feature top-ranked Oklahoma, third-ranked Stanford, eighth-ranked California and the 10th-ranked Falcons, is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
