
Air Force drops Jacksonville, 18-5, in lacrosse

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Freshman Chris Walsch scored a career high six goals as Air Force beat Jacksonville, 18-5, in a college lacrosse game Saturday, March 28, at Falcon Stadium. Air Force improved to 5-5 overall while Jacksonville fell to 4-4.
Eight different Falcons scored goals and 13 Falcons had at least one point. Walsh led the Falcons with eight points (6-2-8) while senior Keith Dreyer had six points (4-2-6). Sophomore Zach Payne, from Colorado Springs' Air Academy High School, added a career high three goals.
Jacksonville took a 1-0 lead when Conor Igoe scored a man-up goal at 12:43 of the first. Air Force then scored the next two as Nick Hruby and Dreyer each found the back of the net. Jacksonville's Austin Curtis scored at 7:55 to tie the game at 2-2. Air Force closed out the first quarter with four straight goals as Dreyer, Walsch, Marcus Ward and Austin Smith gave the Falcons a 6-2 lead. Walsch scored two goals early in the second for an 8-2 Falcon lead. Jacksonville's Chase McIntyre scored at 11:04, but the Falcons then ran off seven straight goals. Walsch and Kyle O'Brien scored late in the second quarter for a 10-3 lead at the half.
Walsch and Dreyer each scored twice early in the third quarter and Nate Hruby added another as the Falcons built a 15-3 lead after three quarters. Chase Miller scored for the Dolphins early in the fourth and then Payne scored a natural hat trick with three straight goals to give Air Force an 18-4 advantage. Jacksonville's Zac Buller rounded out the scoring with 4:10 left in the game.
Air Force outshot Jacksonville, 52-19, in the game. The Falcons also won the faceoff (15-11) and ground ball battles (35-29). Falcon goalie Doug Gouchoe earned his fifth win of the season as he made five saves and allowed three goals in 45 minutes. Freshman Jack Warmolts played the final quarter and allowed two goals while making one save and getting one ground ball. Dolphin goalie Bass Barfield took the loss as he played 37 minutes, allowing 13 goals and making eight saves. Addison Sherwood (four saves) and Ben Gleichenhaus (no saves) also played in goal for Jacksonville.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, April 4, against Bellarmine in Dallas, Texas. Air Force's next home game is Saturday, April 18, against Robert Morris at 11 a.m. in Falcon Stadium.
