
Air Force falls to Vermont in triple overtime

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Vermont's Cam Milligan scored in the third overtime period to lift the Catamounts to an 11-10 win over Air Force, Saturday, March 7, in a college lacrosse game in Bethesda, Md. Milligan's goal came at 3:40 of the third overtime. Air Force's two-game winningstreak ended as the Falcons fell to 2-4 overall this season. Vermont improved to 2-4 overall.
Vermont scored the first two goals of the game as James Barlow and Michael Clarke scored 26 seconds apart early in the first quarter. Air Force got on the board when Nick Hruby scored his first of four goals on the afternoon at 5:38. Falcon freshman Chris Walsch tied the game at 4:12. After a Catamount goal, Joe Matarazzo and Keith Dreyer gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead in the second period. Vermont's Ian MacKay tied the game, but Hruby and Christopher Allen answered for a 6-4 lead at the half.
Early in the third period, Vermont scored three straight goals for a 7-6 lead. Air Force answered with three straight goals for a 9-7 advantage. Dreyer Allen and Hruby scored in a span of four minutes. Vermont tied the game on a goal by Barlow late in the third and one by MacKay early in the fourth. Hruby's fourth of the game gave the Falcons a 10-9 lead with 4:48 remaining. Vermont's Michael Clark tied the game with 3:05 left.
After two scoreless overtime periods, Milligan scored unassisted at 3:40 of the third overtime for the Catamount win.
Hruby led the Falcons with four goals. Dreyer and Allen each had two. Walsch had a goal and two assists and leads the team with 14 goals and 20 points.
The teams combined for 86 shots as Air Force had 48 and Vermont had 38. Vermont had 33 ground balls while Air Force had 32. Air Force won 14 faceoffs and Vermont won 12.
Air Force faces VMI on Sunday, March 8, at 10 a.m. ET at Landon High School in Bethesda, Md.
