WALNUT, Calif. - Highlighted by two additions to the Academy's all-time standings, several members of the Air Force track and field team wrapped up the second day of competition at the 57th-annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Friday, April 17.
Carina Gillespie continued to impact the program's record book during her rookie season, clocking the third-fastest 1500-meter time in Academy history. Crossing the finish line in a time of 4:23.65, Gillespie finished fourth in the 78-runner event (third among collegiate runners) and produced her third Freshman Class Record of the year.
Sophomore Zoe Casteel cleared a career-best 11'9¾" in the pole vault to debut in 10th on the program's all-time list. That clearance, a personal improvement of nearly three inches, was tied for 11th in the event's C flight.
Fellow sophomores Taylor Smith and Kyle Pater added top-five finishes in the field events, as Smith cleared 6'10¼" to finish fourth in the open section of the high jump and Pater recorded a career-best height of 16'0¾" to take fifth in the B-flight of the pole vault.
The Falcons, who wrap up action at the Bryan Clay Invitational later tonight, will close out the week in California tomorrow (April 18). Two pole vaulters will return to Mt. SAC, while the rest of the squad will compete at the Beach Invitational in Cerritos.
