SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Tyler Berson registered 3,266 points during the first day of competition in the decathlon at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Diego. Berson, who recorded personal-best marks in three of the five events, is currently eighth in the overall standings.
The freshman opened the day with three straight career-best marks, while finishing sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.34), seventh in the long jump (wind-aided 20'3") and ninth in the shot put (34'6¾"). He added a ninth-place finish in the high jump (5'5¾"), before capping the day with a wire-to-wire victory in the 400-meter dash (49.93) - a time just 0.07 off his career-best mark.
His first-day total is more than 130 points higher than his opening day total at the California Invitational Decathlon in mid-April.
Berson concludes the decathlon tomorrow (May 13), when he returns to the Aztec Sports Deck for the final five events. Friday's action begins at noon, with the 110-meter hurdles.
