USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team broke two Falcon Court records during the first day of action at the Falcon Classic, in Honor of Amy Svoboda, which was held at the Academy's Cadet East Gym on Friday, Aug. 28.
Air Force opened the 2015 season with a narrow 3-2 loss to Montana (25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 25-17, 11-15), before falling to New Mexico State in four sets (22-25, 16-25, 25-15, 20-25).
Senior Rachael Bradley Powers tallied a Falcon Court record seven aces against Montana, shattering the previous record of four that eight people had held. With those aces, Bradley Powers paced the Falcons to a new team mark of 12, which bettered the old mark of 11 that Air Force set in 2012. Freshman Shanleigh Conlan added a pair of aces in the match, while senior Akokwe Clement, junior Savannah Banyai and senior Rebecca Bates each recorded one.
Clement led all offensive players with 17 digs, while sophomore Shelley Spires added 11. Senior Taylor Parker, who registered a match-high five blocks (one solo, four assisted), led the team in hitting with a .500 average (8k-1e-14a). A pair of freshmen took of the Falcons' setter position and combined for 43 of the team's 45 assists (Sarah Hellman-24, Conlan- 19). Bates rounded out Air Force's list of statistical leaders, as she accounted for 20 digs.
In the nightcap against New Mexico State, three players registered double-digit kill totals to combine for 35 of the team's 50 offensive strikes. Spires paced the squad with 14, while Clement and Parker added totals of 11 and 10, respectively. Parker, who added another match-best five blocks, also paced the team in hitting for the second straight match, recording a .368 average (10k-3e-19a). Bradley Powers served up another three service aces, while Parker picked up the first two aces of her career.
