Air Force completes second day at ITA Regional Championships

Senior Chloe Forlini advanced two rounds in singles to pace the Falcons during the second day of the ITA Regional Championships Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Forlini beat Milena Achlamov of Nevada, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round before beating Ludivine Burguiere of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-1 in the third round. Freshman TJ Fumagalli advanced to the third round after beating Lois Wagenvoort of UTEP, 6-3, 6-3. She lost her third round match to Mayci Jones of BYU, 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Elizabeth Barnickel advanced in the consolation bracket, beating Beth Caton of Northern Colorado, 6-0, 6-0. In other consolation singles action, senior Jocelle Rudico fell to Sabrina Demerath of Utah State, 6-3, 7-6 and Lily Forlini fell to Victoria Robertson of Utah, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles action, Fumagalli and Rudico defeated Tavares/Badillos of Idaho, 8-2, after receiving a first round bye.
"It was a strong day for our seeded players. This is the first time we have had two players seeded in singles at this Regional tournament since we have been division I," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Freshmen TJ Fumagalli fought hard to win in straight sets in singles second round, before falling to a player from BYU. TJ does everything we ask and more and we are looking forward to her continuing to develop as a top player from our region. The other seed was senior, Chloe Forlini, dominated both matches by winning in straight sets. It is exciting to see Chloe mature as a leader and top player in our Region. She has worked hard on and off the court to be in this situation and reap the benefits of advancing to the Round of 16 in singles. In the doubles portion, the seeded team of Rudico and Fumagalli advanced handily over the University of Idaho. Both of doubles team and singles players will have their work cut out for them tomorrow."
Play continues Friday with singles and doubles play in the winners and consolation brackets.
