Air Force This Week: The Falcons will split this weekend's matches on the road and at home. On Friday, Oct. 21, Air Force will take on UNLV, in Las Vegas, Nev., at 7:00 p.m. PT, at Peter Johann Memorial Field. On Sunday, the Falcons return home to defend Cadet Soccer Stadium against UMKC, Oct. 23, at 2:00 p.m. MT. Live streams and live stats will be provided for both matches. Last Weekend: The Falcons split a pair of conference matches at home over the weekend. On Oct. 14, the Falcons fell, 0-2, to Utah Valley for their first loss in conference and at home. On Oct. 16, the Falcons showed their resiliency by posting a 3-0 shutout over CSU Bakersfield. John Sims logged a career high two goals in the match.
The Series vs. UNLV: Friday's match between the Rebels and the Falcons will mark the 37th meeting between the programs. Air Force leads the series, 19-14-3. In last year's match the Falcons topped the Rebels, 2-1, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. When playing at UNLV the Falcons are 5-8-1; when playing at Air Force the Falcons are 11-3-1. The Falcons and Rebels have been to overtime six times. In the 36-match series Air Force has scored 62 goals, while UNLV has scored 42.
The Series vs. UMKC: Sunday's match against UMKC marks the ninth meeting between the programs. Air Force leads the series, 4-3-1. Last year, the Kangaroos beat the Falcons, 1-0, in Kansas City. When Playing at Air Force the Falcons are 2-0-1; when playing at UMKC the Falcons are 0-3. In the eight-match series, the Falcons logged 17 goals to the Roos' 12.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Air Force, as a team, has logged 93 points from 32 goals and 29 assists with five matches yet to go; marks that are higher than the previous five seasons concluded with. In 14 matches, 12 different Falcons have logged goals and four Falcons have double-digit points.
College Soccer News Top 30: The Falcons received votes, but are no longer ranked in the College Soccer News' Top 30 poll for the week ending Oct. 16. Air Force made their debut appearance in CSN's Top 30 teams at No. 29 for the week ending Oct. 9.
NSCAA NCAA Division I Men's Western Region Top 10 Rankings: Air Force remains at fifth in the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men's Western region top-10 rankings for the second week in a row following the win-loss split over the weekend. The Falcons first broke into the polls at No. 7, in week three (Sept. 13). In September of 2015 the Falcons were ranked as high as No. 6. In 2014 they held the No. 1 spot in the western region for a week.
Air Force is Flying High: Air Force is playing amongst the best in Div. I soccer as they are ranked third in the nation in total goals (32). The Falcons are fifth in the nation in scoring offense (2.29) and sixth in the country in total assists (29), total points (93) and points per game (6.64). Air Force is also 10th in the nation in assists per game (2.07). The Falcons lead the Western Athletic Conference in the six aforementioned stat categories.
The Falcons boast second in the conference in shots on goal per game (6.29), save percentage (0.764) and win-loss-tie percentage (0.714). They are third in the WAC in shots per game (12.00), shutout percentage (0.36) and team goals against average (1.20)
The Falcons displayed their ability to win on the road with seven goals over conference foes in their last three road matches. In the 1-0 shutout over GCU, the Falcons held the Lopes' top three leading scorers to nil in front of a home crowd exceeding 3,800 fans.
The Falcons put up a two-goal shutout over Houston Baptist; a pitch they have had trouble winning on in the past. In the match against Incarnate Word, the Falcons logged four goals; their fourth four-goals plus performance this season.
Dewing is Doing the Job: Austin Dewing's 19 points, seven goals, five assists and 1.36 points per game average are the highest individual marks amongst all of the WAC footballers in those respective categories. The Colorado Springs native is ranked amongst the top-50 players in NCAA Division I soccer in the aforementioned categories; he is ranked 20th in the nation in total points, 35th in the nation in total goals, 39th in the nation in total assists and 40th in the nation in points per game.
Dewing's three game-winning goals ranks him at 20th in the nation; a mark that is second best in conference. The sophomore forward is also second in the WAC with 0.50 goals per game and third in conference with 0.36 assists per game
Dewing logged his third two-goal match against Houston Baptist; helping the Falcons break a three-game winning drought on Houston Baptist's pitch and facilitating the second conference win on the road.
Dewing was tabbed with the WAC Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 26, as he led the Falcons' charge scoring as many goals as Gonzaga had allowed in their previous two matches combined. He leads the Falcons in shots, assists, goals, game-winning goals and points.
Axhoj, Bone, Parker and Sims - A Force to be Reckoned With: Tucker Axhoj, Tucker Bone, Klint Parker and John Sims combine for 42 points, 15 goals, 12 assists and four game-winning goals. The quartet has taken 76 shots this season with 41 coming on goal.
Sophomore midfielder Bone ranks fifth in conference in assists (5) and sixth in points (12), and was credited with his second game winner in the match against GCU. The Granite Bay, Calif., native was announced to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Men's Team of the Week, Sept. 12-18, as he contributed assists in both of Air Force's wins against St. Mary's and San Francisco. Bone has the second most points (12), assists (4) and game-winners (2) on the squad.
Senior midfielder Axhoj leads the team in career assists and shots with eight and 63, respectively. Axhoj currently has the second most shots this season (23) and is tied with Bone for second most assists (4). Sophomore defender Parker is tied with Bone for second on the team in goals with four apiece; he also leads the team in shots on goal with 13.
John Sims logged a career high two-goal game against CSU Bakersfield, Oct. 16. The Colorado Springs native is fourth in the WAC in goals per game (0.36) and is also tied with Bone and Parker for second most goals on the team.
Duley and Pujats on Lockdown Duty: Team captain Cameron Duley and Trey Pujats are linchpin defenders in the Falcon defense. The duo has played an integral role in marking the opponent's top scorers; contributing to Air Force outscoring their opponents, 32-17, this season.
This past weekend, the Falcon defense mustered their fourth shutout on the season, holding CSU Bakersfield to three shots with none on goal. The week before, Duley was tasked with marking GCU's leading scorer Niki Jackson, who has two hat-trick performances this season; he was held to two shots on goal and no goals under Duley's watch.
Pujats, a junior midfielder from Keller, Tex., marked the leading scorer for Gonzaga and held him to zero shots as the Falcons earned a 4-1 win at home. He was credited as the WAC's Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 19-25.
Between the Pipes: Sylvania, Ohio, native John Wendt leads the conference in save percentage (0.766). Wendt's 1.359 goals against average is a mark that ranks him third in the conference. He has 49 total saves for fourth most in the WAC and averages 4.08 saves per game, making him fifth in conference in that category.
Wendt has two shutouts this season and was credited with Player of the Game honors in the shutout against GCU. Wendt made two remarkable saves against GCU's leading scorer Niki Jackson, in free kick and penalty kick opportunities, to cease the Lopes' momentum and ultimately hold them to nil, on Oct. 8.
Senior goalkeeper Jake Schenk is undefeated in the box. He's logged two shutouts and has only allowed two goals in 225 minutes between the pipes. Schenk was dubbed the WAC's Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 12. The Flemington, N.J., native has logged six saves hand has a .750 save percentage.
Up Next: The Falcons continue conference action with matches against San Jose State and UTRGV, at home and on the road, respectively. Air Force will host San Jose State, Thurs., Oct. 27, at 6:00 p.m. MT. On Saturday, the Falcons will travel to Edinburg, Tex., to take on UTRGV, at 6:00 p.m. CT.
