U.S. Air Force Academy - Falcon men's soccer was unable to find a rhythm against San Jose State in their second home loss of the season. Air Force, 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the WAC, clinched a WAC tournament berth last weekend and still has a chance to earn a top-two seed in the tournament.
"Unfortunately, we didn't have peak performances from a lot of players," explained head coach Doug Hill. "We just stumbled; when you don't have a good performances you see these kinds of results."
The Falcons, who lead the WAC in goals and points, were unable to find momentum on the offensive side of the ball as they struggled to put shots on goal.
The first goal of the game came from the Spartan's Andrew Mendoza in the 71st minute. Spartan forward Suliman Khorami initiated the attack on the box, firing a shot that deflected off of the top bar and into Mendoza's striking range. Mendoza followed with a boot into the left side of the goal from ten yards out to give the Spartans the lead.
Air Force continued the fight, hustling to every ball and keeping up on defense, but was unable to muster the equalizer by the end of regulation. The Falcons took nine shots on the match.
"It just wasn't the team we are used to coaching and seeing play- we can play better," continued Hill. "We had good chances to score early in the game but didn't put them away; credit to San Jose, they're a good team and fought hard."
"Saturday's game becomes that much more important now," Hill added. "The most important thing now is to get back up one more time and play the game that we know we're capable of playing on Saturday."
The Falcons will get a brief rest before heading to Edinburg, Tex., to take on the Vaqueros of UTRGV, Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1:00 p.m. CT. A live stream and live stats will be provided for the match.
