Air Force completes opening day of SMU Invitational

Air Force advanced three singles players and one doubles team Friday during the opening day of the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas.
Freshman TJ Fumagalli defeated Judit Vives of Texas A&M CC, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals of the NO. 3 singles draw. She was joined in the semifinals by teammate Jocelle Rudico, who defeated Khee Yen Wee of Sam Houston State, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4 singles. Lily Forlini advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ema Barkovic of Sam House State. Sophomore Elizabeth Barnickel and freshman Nadeen Lieberman advanced to the semifinals in No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 win over Charline Anselmo and Sara Jamal of SMU.
"There are several teams here that finish in the top of their conferences, so this is a strong tournament," Air Force head Coach Kim Gidley said. "For the day, we only played one player that was not international. This is great experience and should only make us better. The fight was there, we just need to execute are targets a little better."
Play continues Saturday with the second round before concluding on Sunday.
