USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's basketball dropped a 75-49 contest to Vanderbilt in day one action at the 2016 Air Force Classic, Friday night at Clune Arena. The Falcons play Utah Valley in the consolation game tomorrow.
Vanderbilt (6-1) got to the free throw line 32 times, making 27 attempts. The Commodores held a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint and out-rebounded the Falcons 43-33. The game featured 54 combined fouls and 57 free throws.
Erin Whalen led three Vanderbilt players in double-figures with a game-high 19 points. Kayla Overbeck added 15 points, 11 via free throws.
Freshman Kailin Davis led Air Force with 17 points. Classmate Kassady Huffman added 11 points. Davis went 5-for-11 from the field, connecting on three, three-point basket's. Huffman had a team-high seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior Dee Bennett had seven points and four rebounds, junior Cortney Porter scored six points and grabbed four rebounds and freshman Ifeoma Emeka had five points and three boards.
Air Force hung tough early on, trailing 18-16 after the first quarter. Vanderbilt began to pull away in the second quarter with a 16-7 scoring advantage to lead 34-23 at halftime.
Despite the loss, the game was a significant step forward from last year's matchup. Air Force more than halved the deficit of its 86-29 setback at Vanderbilt a season ago.
"I thought we did a very good job defensively against an SEC team, " Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "They're a team that can light it up from three-point range and we did a good job of taking that part of their game away. We had good games from our freshmen and they continue to get better with each game. Our motto this year is to keep moving forward--and this game was a good step forward."
In the first game of the Air Force Classic, SIUE defeated Utah Valley 71-64. SIUE shot 55 percent from the field and hit 8-of-11 three-point baskets (72.7 percent). Lauren White scored 17 points to lead the Cougars (2-4). Taylor Gordon scored 16 points to lead UVU (1-7).
Air Force will take on Utah Valley at 1 pm tomorrow. The championship game features SIUE vs. Vanderbilt and is slated for a 3:30 pm tip.
