WORCESTER, Mass. - Air Force scored two power play goals as the Falcons and Holy Cross skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game, Friday, Dec. 2, at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
Holy Cross (5-5-3 overall, 2-2-3 AHC) took advantage of two Air Force penalties in the first three minutes as T.J. Moore scored a 5-on-3 power play goal at 2:56 with a one-timer from the left circle. Air Force responded with a power play goal of its own. Phil Boje took a shot from the center point that bounced hard off the back wall and right to Erik Baskin on the doorstep. Baskin netted his fourth of the season at 13:15 to tie the game. The Crusaders went ahead again with 2:02 left in the first. Ryan Ferrill won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Charlie Barrow fired a shot that pinballed through traffic and got past Shane Starrett for a 2-1 Holy Cross advantage.
Early in the second period, Air Force tied the game on the power play. Jordan Himley took a feed from Kyle Haak and scored at 18:12. Jonathan Kopacka assisted on the goal, his second assist of the game. Neither team scored the rest of way as the teams skated to their 12th tie in the history of the series.
Holy Cross outshot Air Force, 26-15, in the game, including an 11-3 advantage in the first period. Air Force was 2-for-5 on the power play while Holy Cross was 1-for-5. Shane Starrett made 24 for the Falcons while Paul Berrafato made 13 for the Crusaders.
"In the first period, our forwards didn't do a great job," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Our D- corps played terrific and Shane (Starrett) was a rock for us. Our forwards need to play better. We did pick it up in the second and third period. You can't get off to a start like that against good teams on the road. Then the hockey game got really good and entertaining. They made a push at the end of the third and in overtime. Holy Cross is a solid, well coached team. This was a god hockey game overall."
Air Force (7-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 AHC) and Holy Cross conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7:05 pm ET in Worcester, Mass.
