LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Highlighted by a runner-up finish on the pommel horse and a spot in the event finals, Air Force junior Tim Wang wrapped up the first day of action at the 2016 Winter Cup Challenge on Thursday, Feb. 18, in Las Vegas. Wang, the lone Academy representative at the Cashman Convention Center, earned a pair of top-five finishes during the event's first preliminary session.
Wang registered a score of 14.650 - a mark that was just 0.050 behind the session's event winner - to place second out of 38 gymnasts on the pommel horse and qualify for the event's final day. Wang, who became one of the first two gymnasts in program history to ever qualify for Winter Cup's second day during his freshman season in 2014, is the first to earn two trips into the finals.
The junior added a top-five finish on the high bar (13.850, fifth), while also tying for 13th on the still rings (13.350) and 22nd on the parallel bars (13.000).
After combining the scores of the two preliminary sessions, including the evening session that featured Olympians and current members of the U.S. National Team, Wang earned a top-10 finish on the pommel horse (10th, tie) and a top-20 finish on the high bar (17th, tie).
The Winter Cup Challenge concludes on Saturday, Feb. 20, with the event and all-around finals.
