LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Backed by a combined two-day score of 29.600, Air Force junior Tim Wang earned a seventh-place finish on the pommel horse at the Winter Cup Challenge, which concluded this evening (Feb. 20) in Las Vegas. His seventh-place finish is the highest ever by an Academy gymnast at that prestigious meet.
Wang, who qualified to the pommel horse finals after finishing second (14.650) during Thursday's preliminary session, registered the fourth-highest score of the night on Saturday (14.950). His combined pommel horse total of 29.600 was tied for the second-highest score by a collegiate gymnast on that event, as the full field of 40 featured Olympians and members of the U.S. Senior National Team.
His seventh-place finish is the highest individual placement ever by an Academy gymnast at the Winter Cup Challenge, as he became just the second to ever garner a top-10 finish.
The junior also earned a top-20 placement on the high bar, as he scored a 13.800 in the finals to finish tied for 18th with a two-day total of 27.650. He posted matching marks of 13.350 on the still rings and parallel bars during the second day to complete the event tied for 29th on the rings (26.700) and 33rd on the parallel bars (26.350).
Air Force returns to team competition next week, when they host Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Feb. 26, and Sunday, Feb. 28. Friday's meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., while Sunday's action will get underway at 1:00 p.m.
