WOODLAND, Calif. – After two strong high bar routines moved him into a tie for the national lead, junior Chase Cannon was selected as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week on Tuesday, March 1. It is the first career MPSF honor for the Knoxville, Tenn., native.
Cannon is currently tied for first in the NCAA on that event with a three-score average of 15.233.
He opened the weekend with a victory on the high bar, as he tallied a 14.850 to outscore the field by 0.450 points in his only event of the night. With that score, he helped the Air Force to a season-high team total of 427.500 – the eighth-best score in program history – and a 53-point victory over the visiting Flames (374.150).
On Sunday, Feb. 28, Cannon registered a 15.400 to win the high bar by more than one point. That score, one of the top marks in the nation this season, is the second-highest of his career and just 0.050 off of the Academy record he set two weeks earlier. Cannon, one of two juniors to lead a lineup dominated by freshmen to a 403.400-375.200 victory over Illinois-Chicago, added first-place finishes on the pommel horse (14.300) and parallel bars (season debut, 13.800).
The 11th-ranked Falcons close out the home portion of the 2016 season on Saturday, March 5, when they host fifth-ranked Illinois and ninth-ranked California at 4:00 p.m. (MT).
