LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The strong bands of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy winds that moved through Kansas today (May 26) forced the NCAA to suspend the opening day of the West Preliminary Meet at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence.
Updated Schedule of Events | as of 9:04 p.m. (May 26) ![]()
Due to the cancellation, a new schedule and format was announced that condensed the entire prelim meet into two days. All running events will now be contested as a quarterfinal, while the pole vault and high jump have been moved inside to the Anschutz Pavilion (1575 Irving Hill Road). Please see the attached schedule for all updates.
Lightning delays forced a stop to the morning practice session, but competition began on time with the men's hammer and women's javelin events. Another lightning delay stopped the meet at 2:39 p.m., and although athletes, coaches and spectators were allowed back into the stadium at 3:33 p.m., another lightning delay forced Rock Chalk Park into its third evacuation of the day at 3:56 p.m. - a delay that continued until the meet was officially suspended for the day at 6:54 p.m.
Senior Spencer Baldwin was the only Falcon to compete today, as he took part in the opening flight of the men's hammer throw - one of just two events to begin. With a throw of 197'1", he finished third in the opening flight of 16, but a final placement is not available as the event was suspended at the start of the third flight.
Stay tuned to @AF_TrackField for any additional changes to the schedule.
