Air Force Sweeps Doubleheader With Shutout Wins Over SIUE

 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball took both games of a doubleheader against SIUE in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Falcon Field. The Falcons won via shutouts, taking game one, 8-0, and took game two, 11-0, to improve to 23-20 on the season.
Win the wins, the Falcons tie the school record for wins against Div. I opponents in a season with 22, tying the record set just last season.
In game one, Griffin Jax (7-2) tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Falcons to the 8-0 win. Jax did not allow a base hit until one out in the sixth inning of the seven-inning game. Jax struck out five and allowed just two hits in his fourth complete game of the season and first shutout of the season. The junior righthander moved into a ninth-place tie for most wins in a season at Air Force.
The Falcons scored six runs in the third inning and two in the fourth. Air Force had 10 hits in the game. Tyler Jones went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Designated hitter Bradley Haslam added two hits and two runs scored.
SIUE (9-33) starting pitcher Jarrett Bednar (2-9) allowed six runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Right fielder Logan Anderson broke up the no-hitter with the hit for the Cougars.
In game two, Jacob DeVries matched Jax with two-hits allowed in six shutout innings pitched, improving to 5-5. DeVries also did not allow a base hit until the sixth inning. The junior lefthander struck out seven.  Freshman Jake Gilbert closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning.
The Falcons had 15 hits. Nic Ready went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run. Catcher Rob Dau added three hits. Haslam, Jones, Spencer Draws and Adam Groesbeck had two hits each.
The Falcons jumped all over the Cougars early, with four runs in the first and five in the second to lead 9-0. Air Force tacked on two runs in the fifth.
SIUE starting pitcher Ryan Fritz (0-2) allowed seven runs in just one inning pitched. It was Anderson again, that broke up the no-hit game with the hit.
Haslam and Jones jumped into Air Force's single-season top 10 list in the doubleheader. Jones hit his 14th home run, which is 10th all-time at the Academy. Haslam now has 78 hits on the season, which is eighth at Air Force and 12 shy of the school record.
The doubleheader did not start until 2:30 pm due to rain and lightning. The twinbill was orignially slated for a noon start.
The series finale is tomorrow. First pitch has been moved up one hour to a noon start due to weather concerns.
