The Air Force Academy is slated to host the institution's first ever professional international friendly between Mainz 05 of the Bundesliga and Leones Negros of Ascenso MX, Wednesday, July 13, 7 p.m., at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Head coach Martin Schmidt and a large delegation of the Mainz 05 squad arrived in Colorado Springs for a week-long training camp which will culminate into two friendlies against the Colorado Switchbacks and the Leones Negros. The Zero-Fivers will take the pitch against the Colorado Switchbacks, Tues., July 12 at Switchback Stadium, Colorado Springs, then against Leones Negros at Cadet Soccer Stadium, USAFA, on the following day.
"It's very exciting to have a top quality German club and a top quality Mexican club put their training to action on our home pitch," explained head women's soccer coach Larry Friend.
"I think it's going to be a lot of fun for everyone who shows up to watch the game and we're looking forward to seeing these teams compete at the professional level right here at Cadet Soccer Stadium."
The trip marks the Zero-Fivers' first visit to the United States with the main focus of high-altitude fitness training as Cadet Soccer Stadium sits at almost 7,300 feet above sea-level.
"The training camp in the US connects two important aspects: In a sporting sense it helps us complete the first stage of training and preparation for the new season, furthermore, we are very pleased that we can represent Mainz 05 and the Bundesliga in Colorado," said Sporting director Rouven Schröder.
"We are excited about the contacts that we will make, and looking forward to the journey."
There are plenty of off-the-pitch activities planned; including two autograph sessions, a coach's discussion session and a business evening with local firms.
The match will be televised on ESPN3 and ESPN Deportes. Tickets for the event can be purchased at goairforcefalcons.com.
