USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - A pair of early goals lifted Hawai'i to a 2-1 win over Air Force in women's soccer action Tuesday night at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons snapped a two-game winning streak, falling to 2-2-1 on the season.
Addie Steiner scored both goals for Hawai'i (7-1-1) 20 minutes into the match. Steiner scored in the third and 20th minutes with Raisa Strom-Okimoto assisting on both scores.
After stumbling out the gates in the first half, Air Force was able to get its offense going in the second. Junior Brooke Rittmann scored in the 75th minute to pull the Falcons to within one. Junior Angela Karamanos threaded a well-timed pass into the box to a Rittmann, who was streaking down the right side towards the net. She got the pass on the run and slid the shot under Hawai'i goalkeeper Monk Berger's left side for the goal towards the right post.
Air Force had several attempts at tying the game in the final minutes, but could not get the equalizer.
The Falcons had a 14-9 advantage in shots and 8-3 on corner kicks. Karamanos led the Falcons with six shots.
Junior Alex Kahalley started and played the first half in goal for Air Force, logging one save. Sophomore Jennifer Hiddink relieved Kahalley with one save in 45 scoreless minutes in the second half.
"Hawai'i started off very quickly and had us on our heels," Air Force head coach Larry Friend said. "Hawai'i played organized and was well coached. It took us a moment to get adjusted to the speed of play. Although the score at the end wasn't what we hoped for, I'm extremely happy with our effort and approach to the game in the second half."
Air Force returns to action Friday, Sept. 16, hosting Northern Arizona. Kickoff is 6 pm MT.
