Falcons on the Pitch This Week...
This weekend the Falcons will split a pair of matches on the road and at home. Air Force travels to Omaha, Neb., to take on Omaha, Friday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. CT. On Sunday, Sept. 25, the Falcons will host the Gonzaga Bulldogs in their third home match at Cadet Soccer Stadium, at 1 p.m. MT. Live streams and live stats will be provided for both matches. The Series…
Friday's match with Omaha will mark the first meeting between the teams since the Mavs commissioned a soccer team in 2011. In the last two seasons, head coach Jason Mims has led the Mavs to two winning seasons and a 19-11-5 record.
Sunday's match up with Gonzaga will mark the fifth meeting between the teams. Air Force trails the all-time series, 1-2-1. In their first meeting in 1997, the Falcons topped the Bulldogs, 1-0, on neutral turf. The last meeting between the teams was at Cadet Soccer Stadium in 2003, the Bulldogs outscored the Falcons, 5-3.
Air Force is Flying High…
Following their extension to a four-game winning streak, Air Force has moved up to No. 5 in the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men's Western region top 10 rankings. Last week, the Falcons broke into the poll at No. 7. In 2015 the Falcons were ranked as high as No. 6 in Sept. In 2014 they held the No. 1 spot in the western region for a week.
Air Force has logged seven or more goals for the second consecutive weekend following a 3-2 win St. Mary's and a 4-3 win at San Francisco. The Falcons are the Western Athletic Conference frontrunners in a myriad of categories to include; total goals (16), scoring offense (2.57), total points (52), points per game (7.43), total assists (16) and assists per game (2.29).
Air Force is amongst the nation's best in total goals as they are third in the country with 18, while Buffalo leads the nation with 21. The Falcons' 52 total points place them at fifth most in the nation; just 11 points behind national frontrunner Buffalo. The Falcons are also fifth in the nation in scoring offense. In points per game, the Falcons rank sixth in the nation with 7.43, while Charlotte leads the nation with 10.75.
Dewing is Doing the Job...
Sophomore forward Austin Dewing has soared to new heights following his productive weekend in California. The Colorado Springs native leads the conference in total assists (4) and assists per game (0.57); marks high enough for 17th and 31st in the nation, respectively. He averages 1.14 points per game; third best in conference. Dewing's eight points is also high enough to boast second best in conference in total points. He leads the Falcons in assists and points, and is tied for first on the team in shots (13). He tallied his first game winner in his two-goal performance against San Francisco, Sept. 18.
Tucker is Bad to the Bone...
Sophomore midfielder Tucker Bone was announced to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Men's Team of the Week as he contributed assists in both of Air Force's wins last weekend. His second assist, which led to the game winning goal, came in the 4-3 win over San Francisco on Sunday.
The Granite Bay, Calif., native ranks 66th in the nation and third in conference in total goals (3). Bone averages 0.43 goals per game; a mark that places him third best in conference. He ranks fifth in the conference averaging one point per game, also ranking him fifth in conference in total points. Bone leads the Falcons in goals, shots on goal (7) and is tied with Dewing for first in shots (13). He has the second most points on the team (7).
Life Between the Pipes...
Sylvania, Ohio, native John Wendt is 52nd in the nation, third in the conference, with 25 total saves. The junior goalkeeper holds a .735 save percentage and averages four saves per game; marks high enough for third and fourth in the conference, respectively.
Senior goalkeeper Jake Schenk is undefeated in the box. He's logged two shutouts and has only allowed two goals in 180 minutes between the pipes. Schenk was dubbed the WAC's Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 12. The Flemington, N.J., native has logged five saves hand has a .714 save percentage.
Last Weekend on the Road…
Air Force swept weekend action for the second week in a row earning quality wins over St. Mary's College, 3-2, and the University of San Francisco, 4-3. The win over St. Mary's marked the Falcons' first win on St. Mary's home pitch in six matches.
Sophomore midfielder Tucker Bone was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week for Sept. 20. Bone contributed assists in both of Air Force's wins over the past week. His second assist came in the 4-3 win over San Francisco on Sunday. He provided the game-winning feed with just over one minute left in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Jake Schenk earned WAC defensive player of the week, Sept. 12, for going perfect between the pipes in the 6-0 victory over Bryant. Schenk has two shutouts on the season.
