Air Force Fencing Performs Well at West Invitational

Air Force fencing had a competitive performance at the West Invitational, hosted by Caltech on Sunday, Jan. 15 in Pasadena, Calif. The women's team tied for first place with a 5-2 mark in head-to-head competition.
The men's team went 3-3.
On the women's side, Air Force defeated Brandeis, Caltech, Florida, Incarnate Word and Stanford. The Falcons lost to Northwestern and San Diego. The Falcon women's saber group went 7-0, while the foil group went 6-1.
Freshman Allison Wong led the way with a 20-1 record in the foil. Senior Alyssa Hofilena posted a 16-1 record in the saber. Sophomore Leanne Singleton-Comfort went 15-2 in the saber. Freshman Helen Landwehr also performed well, going 13-7 in the epee.
The men defeated Caltech, Florida and Incarnate Word. The losses came to Brandeis, San Diego and Stanford.
Senior Alexander Elwers led the way, going 12-2 in the men's epee. Freshman Jordan Griffith went 8-5 to lead the way in the foil.
"I thought we performed well," Air Force fencing head coach Abdel Salem said. "It's a good start for the NCAA season."
Air Force returns to action, Feb. 4-5 at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
