FAIRBANKS, Alaska - No. 17 Air Force and Alaska skate to a 1-1 overtime tie in a non-conference college hockey game on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Late in the first period, a five-minute boarding was called on Air Force defenseman Joe Tyran and the Nanooks got on the board. Justin Woods fired a shot from the left point that snuck through traffic in front and got past Billy Christopoulos at 18:06.
Midway through the second period, and just after a Nanook power play expired, it seemed like Alaska would take a 2-0 lead at 9:58. However, the goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference and the Nanooks had a 1-0 lead after two periods.
Air Force (1-0-1) tied the game early in the third period, just after the Falcons killed a Nanook power play. Dan Bailey came out of the penalty box and Trevor Stone found him at the far blue line. Bailey skated in uncontested and scored his first of the season to tie the game at 1-1 at 3:32 of the third. With 30 seconds left in the game, Air Force turned over a puck at its own blue line, but Kyler Pope's breakaway was saved by Billy Christopoulos.
The game was tied at the end of regulation and after the NCAA 5-on-5 overtime. In the 3-on-3 overtime, Nanook Steven Jandric scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway. However the game officially ends in a tie.
Alaska (0-1-1) outshot Air Force, 26-25, in the game. Alaska was 1-for-8 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-4.
"Alaska came at us hard tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They had us on our heels for a bit. We found a way to get three points up here and that is the good thing. This is a tough place to get points, but this is the way you want to start out. We need to learn to manage the game better and we need to not beat ourselves. But we did a lot of good things. We killed a lot of penalty minutes and we persevered. They didn't get anything we didn't give them tonight, but we will learn and get better. Our MVP for the weekend was Billy Christopoulos. He was very good this weekend and there."
Air Force returns home for a two-game non-conference series against Arizona State, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 13-14, at 7:05 pm each night at the Cadet Ice Arena.
