USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Senior Tim Wang will represent the eighth-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team this week at the prestigious Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas. The two-day meet, which will determine the U.S. Men's Senior National Team, begins with preliminary sessions on Thursday, Feb. 16.
The top 42 gymnasts, as determined by the Men's Point Ranking System, and the top three gymnasts on each apparatus, will advance to the finals on Saturday, Feb. 18. The all-around and event champions will be decided by a combined two-day score.
Wang will be making his third appearance at the Winter Cup Challenge – becoming just the third gymnast in program history to earn three invitations to the annual event (an injury precluded his selection in 2015). His name is dotted throughout the nation's top-six, as he is listed second on the pommel horse (three-score average of 14.783), third in the all-around (83.267), fifth on the vault (14.717) and sixth on the still rings (14.650)
In 2014, the then-freshman became one of the first two Academy gymnasts to advance to the event finals, as both he and then-junior Nick Gaudlip both qualified for the second day that year. Wang, who claimed a pair of top-10 finishes during the preliminary round, finished 16th in the all-around finals with a two-day total of 162.950. Last year, as a junior, Wang claimed the program's highest finish ever at that meet, as he posted a two-day score of 29.600 to finish seventh on the pommel horse.
The Riverside, Calif., native will compete in Thursday's evening session, which is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. (warm-ups begin at 4:20 p.m.), inside the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. Wang will open on the vault and rotate through parallel bars, high bar, floor exercise, pommel horse and still rings. Tickets are $50 for an all-session pass or $25 each day.
