Air Force Fencing Competes at NU Duals

Air Force fencing had a competitive weekend at the Northwestern Duals, held Sat.-Sun., Feb. 4-5, at the Castellan Family Fencing Center on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Against a strong field that featured several nationally-ranked opponents, both the men's and women's teams went 4-6.
On day one, the women's team went 2-2. The Falcons defeated Fairleigh Dickinson (18-9) and Wayne State (20-7), with losses to #5 Penn State (19-8) and #6 Penn (19-8).
Leading the way was a perfect 12-0 day in the Saber event by sophomore Leanne Singleton-Comfort. The sophomore was 18-3 on the weekend. Freshman Allison Wong went 9-2 to lead the Falcons in the foil. Freshman Helen Landwehr was the top Falcon in the epee, going 6-6.
Air Force's top group was the saber, going 9-0 in the win over Fairleigh Dickinson and 6-3 over Wayne State. The foil groups strongest match was a 7-2 win over FDU. The epee group won 8-1 over Wayne State.
The men's team went 1-2 on Saturday. The Falcons defeated Wayne State (21-7) and lost to the nationally ranked teams of #6 Penn (17-10) and #9 Stanford (17-0).
Freshman Jordan Griffith led the way, going 8-1 in the foil. Senior Ryan Andrieux was the top performer in the saber, going 5-4. Sophomore Cameron Sullivan went 5-2 in the epee and junior Nathan Lee went 5-3 in the epee.
All three groups for the Falcons won 7-2 vs. Wayne State. The foil group won 5-4 vs. Penn and the epee group defeated Stanford 6-3.
On day two on Saturday, the Falcon women went 1-2 and the men went 1-3.
The women defeated Cleveland State (24-3) and lost to North Carolina (15-12) and #3 Notre Dame (17-10).
Air Force had three wins by the saber group, with sophomore Lauren Sides leading the way with a 7-2 mark in the saber. Singleton-Comfort and senior Alyssa Hofilena went 6-3 as well.
In the foil, senior Waverly Hock went 5-4 to lead the group. The group's best effort game in a 6-3 win over Cleveland State.
Freshman Helen Landwehr led the epee group with a 8-1 record. The group defeated Cleveland 9-0.
The men's team went 1-3 on Sunday. The Falcons defeated Detroit (17-10) and lost to North Carolina (17-10), #4 Notre Dame (20-7) and #6 Penn State (19-8).
Freshman Jordan Griffith led the way, going 10-2 on the day in the foil competition. Sophomore Morgan Geneste went 4-3 in the sabre as well.
Andrieux was Air Force's top performer in the saber, earning three wins. Junior Nathan Lee led the epee group, going 8-4, including a perfect 3-0 run against Penn State.
"We have a young team, but it has strong leadership," head coach Abdel Salem said. "I look forward to us competing better at the Duke Invitational next weekend."
The men's team is now 5-8 on the season and the women's team is 8-6. The Falcons return to action next weekend, Feb. 11-12, at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
