COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Air Force junior Shelley Spires recorded a sixth-place finish in the high jump and captured First-Team All-America honors this evening (March 10), as the Falcons opened competition at the 2017 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.
Spires, who became just the second female in program history to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, finished the meet with a clearance of 6'0½". The junior opened the competition with a first-attempt clearance at 5'9¼", while also clearing the next bar (5'11¼") on her first try. She broke the six-foot bar for the fifth time this year, as she cleared 6'0½" on her second attempt, and exited the competition at 6'1½" – a mark that would've matched her career.
Two members of the men's team also competed at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium tonight, as senior Kyle Pater competed in the pole vault and junior Jamiel Trimble ran in the semifinal of the 200-meter dash.
Pater finished 13th in the pole vault with a clearance of 17'6½". The senior cleared the opening height of 17'2¾" on his second attempt, before making the 17'6½" bar on his third. His NCAA run ended with three misses at 17'10½".
Trimble posted his second-fastest time of the season (20.84) to finish 10th in the 200-meter semifinal ... a time just 0.012 seconds out of the finals. He placed second in the first qualifying heat, trailing only the defending national champion, but spots in that final are based solely on time. Although he was just shy of an advancing spot, Trimble's 10th-place finish was six spots higher than his NCAA Indoor finish last year (16th) and three spots higher than his entry seed this year (13th).
Air Force concludes its run at the NCAA Indoor Championships tomorrow (March 11), when sophomore Kathryn Tomczak competes in the women's pole vault at 5:50 p.m. (CT).
