
Falcons Split Doubleheader at Northwestern

Air Force baseball (12-14) split a doubleheader at Northwestern (7-18) in non-conference action Saturday at Miller Park. The Falcons won game one, 11-3, and dropped game two, 7-6.
In game one, Jacob DeVries (2-2) pitched seven innings and a seven-run sixth inning highlighted Air Force's win. Air Force drew 15 walks in the game, which was two shy of the school record.
DeVries worked a season-high for innings pitched, allowing three runs while striking out four. Freshman Shawn Kelley pitched two scorless innings to close out the game.
Northwestern scored two runs in the fourth inning to take an early lead. Air Force tied the game up with two runs in the fifth inning and blew the game wide open with the big sixth inning. The Falcons drew six walks in the inning, including five in a row and three in a row with the bases loaded. Rob Dau and Nic Ready also added two-RBI hits in the inning.
The Falcons had 10 hits in the game. Adam Groesbeck went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Russell Williams added two hits.
Northwestern starting pitcher Tommy Bordignon (0-2) allowed four runs in 5.2 innings pitched. The Wildcats had six hits in the game. Willie Bourbon had two RBIs to lead Northwestern.
In game two, the Falcons failed to hold a 6-0 lead as the Wildcats scored seven unanswered runs.
Air Force scored two in the first, three in the second and one in the third to jump ahead 6-0.
Northwestern began its rally with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Wildcats scored two in the fourth and tied the game up with a run in the sixth. Northwestern went ahead with a run in the seventh.
Ryan Holloway (1-1) took the loss in 3.2 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Ethan Nichols pitched five innings, striking out five.
The Falcons had 11 hits in the game. Groesbeck, Ashton Easley and Dau had two hits each. Easley added a triple and two stolen bases. Bradley Haslam scored two runs.
Pete Hofman (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Starting pitcher Hank Christie allowed six runs in 2.1 innings pitched. The Wildcats had 11 hits. Jack Dunn and Matt Hopfner had three hits each.
***Update***
Haslam had base hits in both games, extending his streak to 30 games. A scoring change in game one of the DH credited Haslam with a hit to keep his streak alive.
The series finale is slated for noon CT tomorrow.
