The Air Force women's soccer team participated in a Special Olympics Clinic, in conjunction with the Colorado Cup, on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Westminster City Park in Westminster. The Falcons were part of a two-hour clinic that promoted soccer in Colorado.
All six Div. I women's soccer programs in Colorado--Air Force, Colorado, Colorado College, Colorado State, Denver and Northern Colorado--were on hand to lend their soccer expertise in a welcoming and fun atmosphere.
Team captains Alex Kahalley and Kristen Shimkus, both seniors, were thankful to be able to offer a lending hand in the clinic.
"The Special Olympics Soccer Camp was a chance for us as a soccer community to give back to others, being with the children and seeing how happy they were to play soccer was a great reminder to myself and our team of how important the simplicities of life are," Kahalley, a goalkeeper, said. "I think that it empowered myself and all of our players to continue to push ourselves to our limits and to give back to the world. It was a great opportunity to spend time with the other players of the Div. I teams in Colorado as well as the children, sharing our stories while playing the beautiful game of soccer."
"The Special Olympics Clinic was a good way to step back from a weekend of competition and focus on the community," Shimkus, a midfielder, said. "Seeing the parents and their children enjoy a day of soccer for me is special because it reminds me of the reason I play--for the pure love of the game and the relationships that I have gained from it."
