Air Force Swept by San Jose State

Denise Ssozi paced the Falcons with 10 kills, .333 hitting, one ace and three blocks.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 conference match to San Jose State this afternoon (Nov. 10) at Spartan Gym. The 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 loss slipped the Falcons below .500 (14-15) for just the second time this season, while the Spartans improved to 14-11.

Junior Denise Ssozi and senior Abigail Miksch paced the Falcons with 10 kills apiece, while Ssozi, who was battling illness over the last two days, hit at a team-best clip of .333 (10k-1e-27a) and tied for the team lead in aces (one: sophomore Alex King, senior Shanleigh Conlan) and blocks (three: sophomore Kathleen Medill, senior Lauren Heldt). In addition to her ace, Conlan led the team in both assists (17) and digs (16).

Freshman Bailey Keith contributed to two of the Falcons' first three points (kill, block with Medill), but the Spartans jumped out to a fast 6-3 lead. Senior Elizabeth Pennington recorded three straight Air Force points to keep it within three (8-11), while two scores from Ssozi helped the Falcons tie the set at 13. A kill from Medill and a solo blcok from Miksch gave Air Force a 17-16 advantage, but the Spartans scored five of the next six points go up 22-19. Ssozi added another score, but San Jose State took the set, 25-22.

The Spartans took an early 5-1 lead in the second set, but the Falcons responded with four straight points, including a kill from Miksch and an ace from Conlan, to tie the score at five. The Spartans retook the advantage on the next play and used a 6-1 run to push their lead to 15-11. Miksch registered back-to-back kills, while a Ssozi kill and a Heldt/Pennington block pulled the Falcons within one (17-16). A Medill kill kept the Falcons' deficit at one (17-18), but the Spartans closed on a 7-2 run for the 25-19 victory.

Ssozi assisted on back-to-back blocks (one with Heldt, one with Medill) to open the third set, while a kill from Medill gave Air Force the early 4-3 lead. San Jose State scored seven of the next 10 points to take the 10-7 lead, but a Miksch kill, a King ace and a Heldt/Pennington block highlighted a four-point swing to return the advantage to Air Force (11-10). An ace from Ssozi pushed the Falcons' lead to two (14-12), while scores from Miksch (two), Ssozi and Medill kept the advantage at two (18-16). Ssozi added two more kills, but San Jose State scored eight of the final nine points to take the set by a 25-20 margin.

The Falcons begin their final stretch of the season next week, with three matches in five days. Air Force closes out the home portion of its season against Boise State (Nov. 15) and Utah State (Nov. 17), before traveling to Fresno State for the season finale on Monday, Nov. 19.
