Air Force knocked off the Antelopes, 132-111
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's swimming and diving team came away victories in a dual with Grand Canyon University, 132-111, Friday evening, Nov. 2, at Cadet Natatorium.
The Falcons (4-2) had five event wins in the 13-event meet, but their overall depth, which included a pair of 1-2-3 event finishes, as well as a whole host of other runner-up spots, was enough to push them past GCU in the team score.
"We had a great meet tonight," Head Coach Colleen Murphy said. "Our depth really made the difference in the meet, and the team really stepped up from top to bottom. Our team has been training so consistently and working very hard, and it is really paying off."
Air Force's 1-2-3 finishes came first in the 1,000 distance free, as senior Elisabeth Brechbuhl took first with a time of 10:58.17, followed by junior Kelsey Linzmeyer and freshman Abbie Loesch. The other came in the 200 breast, as freshman Evelyn Johnson paced the race with a 2:23.99, followed closely by fellow freshman Caroline Wittich in second and junior Heidi Schellin in third.
In the 200 IM, Air Force finished 1-2 as junior Jayden Glover took gold with a 2:11.99, and Wittich took silver with a 2:13.94. Junior Esther Min had AF's final swimming event win, as she placed first in the 50 free sprint with a 24.15. Finally on the diving board, freshman Krystal Irwin won the 1-meter with a 254.40, while junior Kayla Wofford took second in the 3-meter with a 237.45.
The Falcons return to the pool tomorrow for a tri-meet with GCU, as well as in-state rival Northern Colorado. Action from Cadet Natatorium will begin at 11 a.m. Tomorrow also marks Senior Day, as the six-member senior class will be honored during one of the breaks.
