Hiddink is one of five DI Women’s Soccer Players Selected for the First Team
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Air Force Academy women's soccer senior goalkeeper Jennifer Hiddink was selected to the First Team for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, announced today, Nov. 29. Hiddink is one of five Division I women's soccer players who was selected to the first team, while the other five finalists were chosen for the second team.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 women's candidates announced in September. Votes were combined with fans, media, and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. Ole Miss' CeCe Kizer was the winner of the voting for the Senior CLASS Award.
Hiddink has excelled in all four areas of the award, as a model student, an active member in her squadron as well as the community, and as one of the top goalkeepers in the country over the last four years.
In the classroom, Hiddink is a foreign area studies major, while also minoring in Spanish. She is a two-time Academic All-Mountain West Conference honoree (2016, 2017), as well as a 2017 United Soccer Coaches Academic All-West Region First Team member.
The Wylie, Texas native is a 2018 co-captain for the Falcon women's soccer team, helping lead the team both on and off the field. She has been active within her squadron serving in numerous roles, including as a Support Officer, an Element Leader, and an Operations Clerk.
In her time in Colorado, Hiddink has been an active volunteer with Special Olympics of Colorado, helping with clinics in an effort to spread fun and joy for special-needs kids, as well as promoting women's soccer in the state. She has volunteered her time at the local Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in a variety of roles, while also serving as a volunteer dog-walker at the local pet store. Finally, she went on two separate mission trips to Guatemala, through which she volunteered at a local school, helping to make infrastructural improvements to the school, assisting the children with their studies, and teaching them about the game of soccer.
Hiddink wrapped up her stellar four year Air Force career with her second All-MW honor, as she earned Second Team honors this season, and First Team honors last season. The Wylie, Texas native had another outstanding year between the pipes for the Falcons, finishing with 108 saves, a goals against average of 1.16, a save percentage of .837, and a saves per game average of 6.35. She also totaled five shutouts, four of them solo. With back-to-back seasons with 100-plus saves (120 in 2017), Hiddink became the first Air Force goalie since J.J. Wolf in 2002-03 to accomplish that feat.
Her total saves, save percentage, and saves per game were all tops in the conference, while nationally her saves were 10th, saves per game 17th, and save percentage 48th. In conference play, Hiddink started all 11 matches, and played all but 11 minutes of action. In those 11 games, she allowed zero or one goals in nine of the 11, with two shutouts.
For her career, Hiddink found herself near the top of the Falcon record book in numerous categories. The veteran netminder finished second in Air Force history in career saves with 353. In addition, she is second in goals against average (1.28), third in shutouts (13), while also ranking fourth in wins (17), and GK minutes (5415).
Hiddink also officially cemented herself as one of the all-time best to play in the Mountain West Conference, as she became the all-time leader in career saves in MW Conference history with the 353 stops. The previous record of 338 had stood since 2010. On top of that, her 5.88 career saves per game average ranks second in MW annals.
Hiddink was a First Team All-Mountain West goalie in 2017, while also being selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Third Team. That season, she set the program single-season record with 120 saves, while also breaking the Mountain West record for conference game saves with 87. Her 120 saves were good for ninth in the country, while her 6.32 saves per game was ranked 20th. She was able to tally five shutouts. Her efforts helped Air Force to its best conference record in program history and a spot in the conference tournament for the first time since 2005. Hiddink aided in an eight-match unbeaten streak, the longest in the nation during 2017.
As a sophomore, she was in the top 60 in saves per game, totaling 80 overall, while guiding the team to seven wins. The 14 victories in 2016 and 2017 was Air Force's best two-year stretch since 2002-03.
