Jaci Smith Shatters Air Force’s 5000-Meter Record at Indoor Opener

The senior deleted more than 26 seconds off of the program's previous record during today's opener.
BOSTON – Recording a career-best time of 15:28.07, Air Force senior Jaci Smith crushed the Academy's 5000-meter record this afternoon (Dec. 1), as she opened the 2018-19 indoor track and field season at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston.
Smith, who finished eighth in a stacked field of competition at the prestigious opener inside the BU Track and Tennis Center, took nearly 26 seconds off the program's two-year-old record – and deleted more than 30 seconds off of her previous 'best' indoor time that came during her championship-winning run at the Mountain West Championships last February. The seventh-best collegiate finisher in this afternoon's 52-competitor race, Smith now holds the fastest indoor and outdoor 5000-meter marks in Academy history.
The rest of the Falcons' track and field team kick off the season next Friday (Dec. 7), when they host the program's annual Air Force Holiday Open at the Cadet Field House Indoor Track.
