COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Air Force senior Shelley Spires recorded a seventh-place finish in the high jump and captured First-Team All-America honors for the second consecutive year, as the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.
Spires became the first female in the Academy's Division I history to garner back-to-back All-America honors at the indoor championship meet -- and just the sixth athlete overall for Air Force to accomplish that feat.
The senior finished the meet with a clearance of 6'0½" -- her second-best mark of the season. Spires, who opened the competition with a first-attempt clearance at 5'9¼", also cleared the next bar (5'11¼") on her first try. She broke the six-foot bar for the fourth time this season, as she cleared 6'0½" on her second attempt, and exited the competition at 6'1½" -- a mark that would've matched her career high.
Sophomore Michael Rhoads also competed at Gilliam Indoor Stadium tonight, finishing 15th in the semifinal heat of the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.73.
With the indoor season complete, Air Force opens the outdoor portion of the 2018 season next weekend (March 17-18), when it travels to Boulder for the Jerry Quiller Classic.
