TEMPE, Ariz. – Highlighted by an Academy record in the 1500-meter run from senior Carina Gillespie, the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the 39th-annual Sun Angel Classic this evening (April 7) in Tempe. Gillespie was one of two Falcons to impact the Academy record book at Sun Angel Stadium, while Air Force captured four first-place finishes.
Gillespie posted a personal-best time of 4:19.46 to break the program's five-year-older record and finish as the top collegiate in the Premiere section of the 1500-meter run. Finishing second in the full 16-runner field, Gillespie also improved the program's Senior Class Record and became the only Air Force runner to hold all four of the current Class Records.
Junior Jerni Self also impacted the Academy's all-time standings today in Tempe, as she registered the seventh-best outdoor pole vault clearance in program history (12'7½") to finish sixth in the Premiere section. Self was one of two Falcons in the top section of the pole vault, as classmate Kathryn Tomczak won the Premiere title with a season-best matching clearance of 13'7¼".
The men accounted for a pair of first-place finishes on the day, as senior Jamiel Trimble won the 100-meter dash and junior Josh Wojciechowski finished first in the 1500-meter run. Trimble posted a time of 10.63 to win the meet's shortest race, while Wojciechowski posted a time of 3:55.26 to win the 16-runner event by a half-second. Air Force accounted for additional top-eight finishes in those events, as freshman Scott Johnson finished fourth in the 1500-meter run (3:59.33) and senior Robbie Anderson placed seventh in the 100-meter dash (10.81).
Freshman Parker Spearman recorded a runner-up throw of 200'3" to pace the men to three of the top-four distances in the javelin. Seniors Donny Crabill and Luke Piper joined Spearman in the top half of the event standings, as they finished third (season-best 198'0") and fourth (season-best 196'0"), respectively.
Sophomore Michael Rhoads clocked a time of 1:49.92 to finish eighth in the Premiere section of the 800-meter run, while senior Zac Petrie placed second in the open section of that event with a time of 1:51.62. Junior Sedacy Walden and senior Tyler Koss finished second and third, respectively, amongst collegiate runners in the 400-meter run, as Walden ran a 46.96 and Koss crossed the finish line in 47.01 to finish third and fourth, overall, in the full 27-runner field.
Senior Shelley Spires finished second amongst collegiate athletes in the high jump (5'8¾", third overall), while sophomore Megan Irvine clocked a time of 2:14.90 to place seventh out of 22 runners in the Premiere section of the 800-meter run. Junior Micah Fontaine clocked a time of 14.16 to finish fourth in the collegiate field – and eighth overall – in the 110-meter hurdles, while senior Chip White earned that same overall placement in the 400-meter hurdles (53.01).
Air Force returns to action next Saturday (April 14), when it travels to Greeley for the NoCo Challenge.
