
Calvin Berstler Leads Decathlon after Day One

CLOVIS, Calif. -- After capping the day with a pair of first-place marks, Air Force senior Calvin Berstler leads the decathlon after five events at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which kicked off this afternoon (May 9) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
The senior registered 3709 points during the first five events to lead the field by 133 points. Classmate Tyler Berson is in third with 3440 points, while freshman Justin Harmon is in sixth with 3335 points.
In addition to posting a pair of first-place marks, Berstler registered career-best marks in four of his five events. The senior tallied personal-best marks in the 110-meter hurdles (11.02, third), shot put (35'7¼", seventh) and 400-meter dash (49.46, first), while matching his best distance in the long jump with a wind-aided jump of 21'7½" (third) and posting a clearance of 6'4¾" to win the high jump by more than three inches.
Berson opened the day with a huge PR in the 110-meter hurdles, as he took 0.30 seconds off of his previous best time to finish second. He earned a second runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash (50.92), while adding a pair of career-best marks in the long jump (21'0¾", fourth) and shot put (36'1 ½", fifth). The senior wrapped up his opening day with a sixth-place clearance of 5'8½" in the high jump.
Backed by a four-foot personal improvement in the shot put (37'4", fourth), Harmon posted career-best marks in four of his five events. The freshman finished second in the long jump (21'10"), third in the 400-meter dash (51.35) and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (11.27), while adding a seventh-place mark in the high jump (5'3¾").
The trio continues action at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Championships tomorrow (May 10), when the final five events of the decathlon begin at 4:00 p.m. (PT). The individual events also kick off tomorrow at Veterans Memorial Stadium, as the finals of the 10,000-meter run will get underway at 8:15 p.m.
