Falcons Record 3-0 Sweep of Binghamton

Air Force finished the Maverick Classic with a sweep of the Bearcats in Texas.
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Air Force volleyball team wrapped up the Maverick Classic this afternoon (Sept. 1) with a 3-0 victory over Binghamton at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. With every player that traveled getting to see the court, the Falcons recorded a 25-19, 25-14, 25-21 victory over the Bearcats.
Junior Denise Ssozi paced the Falcons with 15 kills on .382 hitting (15-2-34), while also tying for the team lead in blocks (three, all assisted) and registering her fifth double-double of the season with 12 digs. Seniors Sarah Hellman and Shanleigh Conlan led the team in digs (15) and assists (18), while sophomore Kathleen Medill tied with Ssozi for the lead in blocks and recorded one of the Falcons' three service aces (senior Abigail Miksch, sophomore Jordan Daniels).
Ssozi and senior Elizabeth Pennington recorded early kills, but the Bearcats scored six straight to take an 8-2 advantage and force the Falcons into an early timeout. A kill by Ssozi stopped Binghamton's run and sparked a 12-3 stretch by Air Force that ended in a 14-11 lead for the Falcons. The junior registered three kills during the run, while Miksch and Conlan both added a pair. Binghamton pulled within one (14-13), but three attacking errors by the Bearcats pushed the Falcons' lead to four (17-13). Ssozi, Pennington and Medill added kills, while Ssozi teamed with Conlan for a block, as Air Force won the opening set, 25-19.
Air Force rattled off seven of the first eight points to send Binghamton to the bench early in the second set (7-1). Miksch (kill, ace) and Pennington (kill, block with Medill) tallied multiple points during the run, while Ssozi and sophomore Mackenzie Robertson added kills. The Falcons maintained a sizable advantage behind an ace from Medill and kills from Miksch (three), Pennington (two) and Ssozi (two), as the Falcons doubled up the Bearcats (18-9) to send Binghamton into its second timeout. Ssozi and freshman Rachel Budzinski each added a pair of scores as Air Force easily claimed the second set by a 25-14 margin.
A pair of kills from Pennington helped Air Force take an fast 4-1 lead in the third, while kills from Galloway, Ssozi, Conlan and Miksch, as well as a Medill/Ssozi block, helped Air Force extend its advantage to nine (14-5). Sophomore Cambria Galloway and freshman Bailey Keith registered kills, but Binghamton used a 9-3 run to cut the Falcons' gap to three (17-14). Three kills from Ssozi and an ace from Daniels pushed the lead back to six (20-14, 21-15), but the Bearcats responded again to bring the score within three again (24-21). Ssozi registered the final kill to give Air Force the 25-21 victory and its first sweep of the season.
Air Force returns to action on Monday, Sept. 3, when it opens the home portion of the schedule against McNeese State at 1:00 p.m., inside the Academy's Cadet East Gym.
