Air Force Men’s Soccer sweeps four-game home stretch, extends to seven-straight wins
The Falcons took the field with the pedal to the floor, playing fast-paced soccer and applying pressure early on. In the seventh minute, Klint Parker assisted Danny Han in the first goal of the game from 18-yards out to the near post. The goal marked Han's second of the season while Parker was credited with his first assist.
In the 27th minute, Austin Dewing stole the ball in the Harvard box and dished it to 2017 first-team All-American Tucker Bone who fired off a shot that was deflected by a Harvard defender. Dewing collected the deflection and dropped off a textbook heel pass to Bone who then notched the Falcons' second goal via the give-and-go assist from Dewing. The goal is Bone's fourth of the campaign while Dewing was credited with his first assist.
In the 36th minute, freshman JT D'Emidio drew a foul within the penalty box where Air Force sent Austin Guerrero forward to take the penalty kick. Guerrero launched a well-placed ball into the lower left corner of the cage to extend the Falcons' lead to three-nil.
Pushing the pace into the second half, Dewing put his footwork on display as he worked around several Crimson defenders to find an opening for a right-footed toe poke from the six-yard line, catching the keeper off guard for the Falcons' fourth goal. Dewing leads the team with five goals this season.
In the 57th minute, a shifty D'Emidio was giving the Harvard defense a proper workout as he juked around three defenders to find himself in a one-on-one with the keeper. The freshman from McKinney, Texas, got the keeper to come off his line then drilled the ball into the left side net for his first collegiate goal.
Harvard prevented the shutout in the 59th minute as a communication breakdown in the Falcon defense allowed Alfred Perez a chance on the frame. He capitalized for Harvard's only goal.
Junior forward Aaron Uribe put the final touches on the win, forcing a turnover and taking the ball directly at the keeper who couldn't defend the ensuing shot that was sent low and wide to the near post. Uribe has two goals this season.
Air Force saw a standout performance from sophomore defender Joe Ortiz who proved to be too much for the Harvard offense. Ortiz anchored the defense that only allowed two shots on the day and only nine combined from this weekend's opponents.
At the conclusion of the match, Air Force dominated every facet of the stat sheet, taking 17 shots to Harvard's two. Ten Falcons attempted shots on the day led by Bone with three. The offensive clinic allowed Air Force's starting lineup a chance to get some well-deserved rest as the young bench got the opportunity to register some valuable minutes. All 25 of Doug Hill's suited players checked into the match, with everyone logging at least 13 minutes or more of playing time. Senior defender David Louthan registered the most minutes with 83. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Seazzu improved to 7-1 on the victory, registering one save in two shots faced all game. Ben Blessing clocked 18 minutes in the Falcons cage but went untested in that time.
"I'm very pleased with this weekend's results," said coach Hill. "We got the chance to expose some weaknesses in our starting lineup and substitutes so we know what we need to improve on. We're not where we want to be yet but I think we can get there."
"The team is still growing and getting more clinical and that's what we want to see," continued Hill. "We're going to work on keeping the ball more and defending in layers a little better. We would have liked to keep the clean sheet but we got exposed on the back post so we'll make our adjustments, clean some things up and get ready for conference play. Overall I'm pleased with our tremendous non-conference results."
Air Force opens the conference slate with a Saturday match against UMKC, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. CT, in Kansas City. The Falcons and Roos will be meeting for the ninth time with Air Force leading the all-time series, 5-2-1. Last season the Falcons downed UMKC in Kansas City, 2-1, in overtime.
