Air Force men’s soccer improves to nine-straight wins in their fifth shutout of the season
After a slow start in the first period a set piece for the Falcons in the 25th minute would present a scoring opportunity. Luis Martinez sent a precision corner kick into the box loaded with Air Force's tallest athletes. David Louthan, who scored his first career goal on the same kind of set piece, went on to capitalize for his second goal, lifting off into the box and kicking the ball into the top left angle. The assist marked Martinez's third of the season.
With the motor running and beginning to heat up, the Falcons' offense began to settle in. Tucker Bone, a 2017 USCA first-team All-American, lit the scoreboard again via a touch-and-go assist from Austin Dewing's slick heel-touch pass in the 36th minute. In the same minute, the Falcons were back to attacking the Cardinal's cage. Senior Klint Parker followed suit with another touch-and-go assist to Bone who sent a ball cross frame into the goal from 18-yards out. The assist marked Parker's third as Bone notched his seventh goal, making his case stronger in the MAC Hermann trophy running.
In the 68th minute, with reserves making their way onto the pitch, a free kick opportunity taken by Martinez yielded a header from within the box by sophomore Julian Flores who notched his first goal of the season, increasing the Falcons' lead to four-nil.
At the final whistle, Air Force dominated the stat sheet yet again, outshooting its seventh opponent this season by a wide margin. The Falcons took more than four times the shots as the Cardinals (19-4), while also taking nine corner kick attempts to UIW's one. Aaron Uribe, Flores and Bone led the team with three shots apiece while Bone led with three shots on frame. Falcon keeper Andrea Seazzu secured his ninth straight win in the effort as he notched two saves.
"I was pleased to see the team get the shutout," said head coach Doug Hill. "It took a little longer than we like to get the offense started and a nice set piece goal was what we needed to get going. This is a veteran team and it shows the character of our players when they persist in their offense."
"It's always nice to get up by a few goals," continued Hill. "We got some quality minutes for our substitutes who did a good job securing the shutout. We want to continue closing teams out early and getting that quality time in game, as well as rest for others."
The Falcons continue WAC action at home as they host UT-Rio Grande Valley, Saturday at 1 p.m., at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons are undefeated in the three games series with two wins and a tie against the Vaqueros.
