Air Force men's soccer takes on the Vaqueros on a nine-game winning streak

THIS WEEKEND: The No. 8 Air Force Falcons will continue Western Athletic Conference action against UT-Rio Grande Valley, Saturday, Sept. 29. UTRGV and the Falcons will square off for the fourth time at 1 p.m., with Air Force leading the three-game series, 2-0-1.
UP NEXT: The Falcons return to the road for a pair of WAC match-ups against CSU Bakersfield and Cal-Baptist, Oct. 5 and Oct. 7, respectively. On Friday, Air Force and CSU Bakersfield will meet for the 13th time in program history on the Main Soccer Field at 11:00 a.m. PT; the Falcons leads the series, 7-4-1. On Sunday, Cal-Baptist and Air Force will convene on the Lancers' pitch for their first-ever meeting at 1 p.m. PT.
LAST TIME OUT: Air Force picked up its fifth shutout and ninth-straight win of the season in the 4-0 win over Incarnate Word (0-7-1), Thursday evening at Cadet Soccer stadium. The eighth-ranked Falcons improve to 9-1 as they prepare to take on the Vaqueros of UTRGV who fell at Utah Valley, 1-2, Thursday night.
GONE STREAKING: The Falcons' nine-game win streak ties Lou Sagastume's 1986 team for the program record. The longest Air Force unbeaten streak is currently Doug Hill's 2017 squad who went 14 games without losing (11 wins, three ties). A win against UTRGV would put the 2018 squad at the top of the record book for straight wins. The Falcons returned seven starters and 17 letter winners from that record-breaking team.
AMONG THE BEST: The class of 2019 is considerably one of the program's best teams to date. In addition to adding two All-Americans in the 2017 campaign and a record best five to the All-West Regional team and program-best eight to All-WAC teams; in terms of winning, they have posted 44 career wins to date with at least nine games remaining in their career. Tucker Bone has played in all 44 of those wins. Teammate Austin Dewing did not play in one of the wins, totaling 43 career wins with the Falcons. Bone and Dewing lead the team in career games played with 69 and 66, respectively. Albeit Bone has more wins on his career profile, Dewing has the better win-percentage. Bone's win-percentage is .674 while Dewing's is .689.
HILL HITS THE CENTURY MARK: Falcon head coach Doug Hill recorded his 100th career victory on Sept. 22 as his Falcons earned a 4-1 win at Kansas City to open WAC play. Hill has spent 24 years coaching at the Academy while spending 12 of those years at the helm of the program. The 1983 USAFA graduate has hit a hot streak over the past two seasons, guiding the Falcons to two-straight 14-win seasons, a mark that is one win shy of the tying the program record of 15 single-season wins. Hill's overall record as a head coach is 100-98-23 (.505), while holding a 47-46-14 (.505) mark in conference matches. He has the second-most wins in program history.
ON THE MAP: Air Force is officially a consensus top-10 team among the three polls released by press time. The Falcons moved up two spots to eighth in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and are ninth in the College Soccer News Top 30 and 10th in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25. The ranking is the fourth-highest held in program history. In 1996, the Falcons were No. 6 on Oct. 21, No. 4 on Oct. 28, and then held their highest ranking ever at No. 3, on Nov. 4.
The United Soccer Coaches switched up the regional ranking system for 2018 and the WAC is now in the Far West Region with the Pac-12 and Big West conferences. Air Force continues to sit atop the rankings for the second straight week.
The WAC has three teams in the top 50 of the first NCAA RPI release. Air Force is the top team at 24 with UT Rio Grande Valley at 32 and Seattle U at 38. Houston Baptist is just outside the top 50 at 51.
THE FALCONS AT A GLANCE: Seven seniors, a pair of juniors and a pair of sophomores make up the Falcons' starting 11, led by team captains Tucker Bone, Austin Dewing and Zane Moxley. Air Force is holding the top spot in the conference in points (80), goals (28), assists (24), least goals allowed (6), goals against average (0.59) and shutouts (5). The Falcons have tallied nearly five times as many goals as opponents faced (28-6). Air Force has outshot eight opponents in 10 games, totaling 158 shots to 84 by opponents faced. When attacking the frame, Air Force more than doubles opponents' shots on goal numbers, taking 72 to opponents' 30.
Individually, Bone leads the squad 18 points and 24 shots. Dewing is the Falcons' runner-up in goals with six this season. Bone and Luis Martinez and freshman JT D'Emidio have four assists apiece for the most on the team. Bone and Dewing are the Falcons' senior-most veterans with Bone making 56 career starts in 69 games played while Dewing has played in 66 career matches with 37 starts.
The Air Force defense is firing on all cylinders, posting five shutouts in the nine-game winning streak including a 3-0 routing of nationally-ranked Colgate. The Falcons' defense has held the last four opponents to single-digit shot counts, holding Harvard to only two shots in the entire match on Sept. 16, and UIW to four shots on Sept. 27. In net, AF's Andrea Seazzu holds the best goals against average (0.61) and also leads the league in shutouts (5). He is 9-1 this season with a .800 save percentage. With the assistance of the Falcons' superior defensive line, Seazzu has nine shutouts in 15 career appearances for a 14-1 career record in the Air Force cage.
