Air Force Makes Rare Trek to West Point
Following a weekend away from regular season competition, the Air Force Academy women's soccer team hits the road for its first regular season match outside of Colorado at Army West Point, Friday, Sept. 7. While the two service academies share a unique bond and, rivalry, Friday marks just the second meeting between the two schools since 2008, and Air Force's first trek to Army since 2006.
Last Time Out
Air Force got its first victory of the 2018 season with a commanding 3-0 win over Creighton University, Friday evening, August 24, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Omaha native sophomore Emma Nelson scored two of the goals against her hometown team. Junior Kasey Stavig also netted her first career goal. The Falcons scored two of the goals in the first half, allowing for goalies, senior Jennifer Hiddink and sophomore Danielle Katz, to have a nice cushion as they combined for the shutout. It was Hiddink's 16th win of her career, while recording two saves. Meanwhile, Katz saw her first action between the pipes in a Falcon jersey, tallying one save as well.
Comfortable Win
With the three-goal difference in the win over Creighton, Air Force won by 3+ goals for the first time since a 4-0 win over Fresno State, Oct. 24. Since then, the Falcons have always had close victories, with all of their wins coming by two goals or less.
Hiddink The Brick Wall
Senior Jennifer Hiddink has had an outstanding Air Force career, and because of that she finds herself near the top of the Falcon record book in numerous categories. The veteran netminder is fourth in Air Force history in career saves with 266. She is 21 saves behind Kristy Kuhlman for third place all-time, and 99 away from breaking the program record of 364 set by Steph Jardine. In addition, the Wylie, Texas native is fifth in GK minutes (4045), and shutouts (9), while also ranking fourth in wins (16), and tied for fourth in goal against average (1.38).
Among The Nation's Best
In addition to the career program marks, Hiddink is also seeing her name among the nations elite. This season, Hiddink's 7.00 saves per game ranks 16th in the country, while her 21 total saves are 122nd. In terms of active career leaders, Hiddink's 266 saves ranks 18th among active goalies, while her 5.78 saves per game are eighth.
Rookies Racking Up The Minutes
With nine freshmen joining the roster entering the season, and thanks to some injuries to key upperclassmen, rookies have seen plenty of action over the first three games. Five freshmen have combined to make 10 starts so far, while freshmen have accounted for 835 of the teams 2,940 combined minutes (28.4 percent).
Scouting Army
The Black Knights enter the weekend with a 3-1-2 overall record, including wins over Wagner, Binghamton, and Iona. They also drew against Marshall and Northern Arizona, while falling to Penn, 1-0. They have out-scored opponents, 7-4, and have goals from six different players. Sophomore forward Erynn Johns leads the team with six points, including four assists and a goal. In net, Army has sophomore Sydney Cassalia who has played every minute of their six matches, notching 37 saves while only allowing four goals. She has three shutouts to her record already, and a save percentage of .902.
Opponent Connections
The only connection between the two schools, besides both being service academies, is a trio of Omaha natives. Air Force's Emma Nelson, and Army's Sydney Cassalia and Emily Torres all hail from the Nebraska city, with Nelson attending Marian High School, while Cassalia west to Millard West, and Torres went to Westside High School.
Up Next
The Falcons return home for a two-match non-conference weekend, beginning with hosting the University of Houston Thursday evening, Sept. 13. Kickoff against the Cougars at Cadet Soccer Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
