The Falcons knocked off host Pepperdine, while narrowly falling to Cal Baptist
MALIBU, Calif. – The Air Force Academy women's swimming and diving team split a pair of duals, knocking off Pepperdine, 141.5-57, while narrowly falling to Cal Baptist, 158.5-141.5, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, at Pepperdine's Runnels Memorial Pool. The Falcons won six events on the day, while finishing in the top three in 14 of the 16.
"Our team really stepped up today," Head Coach Colleen Murphy said. "We raced very well and had some in-season best times that truly made a difference in the meet."
The meet against the Lancers came down to the final two events, but CBU was able to get wins in both races to take the dual score.
Junior Heidi Schellin led the way for the Falcons, winning two races on the afternoon. First off was the 100 breatstroke, as she took first with a 105.64. Later in the day, she placed first with a 2:21.58 in the 200 breast.
As she has all season, sophomore Kylie Stronko paced the Falcons in the backstroke events, taking first in both the 100 and 200. In the 100, Stronko clocked in with a 58.32, while timing in with a 2:06.43 in the 200 to earn crucial points for AF in both events.
The final individual event win came courtesy of junior Esther Min in the 100 fly. The Alaska native clocked in with a 57.76, while her teammates, freshman Emily Bardak and senior Kathy Lim, finished right behind her for a 1-2-3 finish. Air Force also won a relay, taking first in 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.53.
"We are in a very good spot heading into the last three and a half weeks of the season, and we will be peaking at Mountain West Championships," Murphy added. "This team has come so far this season, and we are doing our best racing right now."
This concludes dual action for the Falcons, as they finish the slate with a winning 9-8 record. Next on the docket will be the Falcon Diving Invite, Feb. 1-2, while the swimmers will compete in the Colorado Sprint Championships, Feb. 2.
