USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's tennis defeated both Colorado and Montana State in a pair of duals Saturday afternoon at the indoor tennis courts at Cadet Gym. The Falcons defeated Colorado 4-3 and swept Montana State 7-0 to remain undefeated this season and improve to 6-0.
The Falcons pulled off the 4-3 win over Colorado in a marathon five hours of competition. The Falcons earned the doubles point with wins by TJ Fumagalli and Kristin Kerrigan at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 win over Andrinopoulos/Malinen. The No. 3 group of Elizabeth Barnickel and Nadeen Lieberman defeated Forster/Farrow 7-5.
In singles, the Falcons split 3-3, but the go-ahead win in the final matchup at #5 singles by Ashleigh Harvey. In a match that went three sets, it was Harvey that came through in the break-point decision to give the Falcons the win. In the past week, Air Force has wins over opponents from the Pac 12, Big Ten and Big East conferences.
The Falcons also go singles wins at No. 1 by Fumagalli, 6-2, 6-4 over Annabelle Andrinopoulos and at No. six by Lieberman over Ky Ecton 6-0, 6-4.
Against Montana State, the Falcons won 7-0. The Falcons took both doubles, as Fumagalli and Kerrigan defeated Mary/Vink 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Barnickel and Lieberman won at No. 3 doubles 6-3.
The Falcons won five matches in two sets. Fumagalli won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2 over Laura Mary. Barnickel won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0 and Meredith Jones won at No. 3 6-4, 6-2. The Falcons also got wins at No. 4 by Kerrigan 7-6, 6-4, at No. 5 by Harvey 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 and at No. 6 by Lieberman 6-0, 6-1.
"This is the second big weekend in a row for this team," head coach Kim Gidley said. "To beat Colorado – from the Pac 12 -- was huge for our program. Colorado gave us all we could handle from the start to the end of the match. We came away with the doubles point playing some of our best doubles to date with wins at no. 1 and no. 3. This gave us a lot of confidence going into the singles. I give a lot of credit to Colorado for their relentless effort of never giving up. In a match that lasted five hours, it went the distance. We were down in the match 3-2 and then we put on our no. 5 and no. 6 singles. We had to win both matches in order to win the match. Nadeen won in straight sets to tie the score up. Then Ashleigh battled back from being down 4-3 in the third set to win in the tie-breaker for the third. In team tennis, it does not matter what position a person plays, everyone has to do their job. Against Nebraska it was our no. 6 singles player (Nadeen) that clinched the match. Today it was our no. 5 player – Ashleigh Harvey. This is what makes team tennis great! Our cadet/athletes battled and would not be denied today. Anytime you can start off 6-0 and wins against two of the Power Five Conferences is huge."
Air Force returns to competition Friday, Feb. 1, hosting CSU-Pueblo and Oklahoma Baptist.
