Air Force Claims Strong Road Win over Nevada

The Falcons handed the Wolfpack just their second loss since the first week of September.
RENO, Nev. – The Air Force volleyball team snapped a three-match skid in impressive fashion this evening (Oct. 10), as it downed Nevada – the second-ranked team in the Mountain West – by a 3-1 margin at Virginia Street Gym. The Falcons handed the Wolfpack just their fourth loss of the season, as it captured the 25-16, 24-26, 26-24, 25-21 victory and improved to 2-1 in true road matches this year.
Air Force out-hit the Wolfpack by 65 points (.233-.168), while also holding the advantage in kills (62-47), service aces (8-4) and blocks (10-9). Senior Denise Ssozi led all players with 19 kills and was one of three Falcons to hit over .300 in the match. Junior Andi Ahlers hit at a match-high .455 clip (5-0-11), while Ssozi and sophomore Bailey Keith hit .350 (19-5-40) and .320 (11-3-25), respectively. Ahlers added 44 assists and 14 digs for her 15th career double-double, while Ssozi added 11 digs to her stat line for her 28th double-double. Juniors Cambria Galloway (three) and Alex King (two) registered multiple service aces on the night, while King posted a match-high 25 digs and Galloway was one of three Falcons to collect a team-leading four blocks on the night. The junior posted one solo block and three assisted stops during the match, while Keith and freshman Taleah Cooper each assisted on four stops.
Sophomore Vittoria Juarez opened the match with a kill, while additional strikes from Keith, Cooper and Ssozi evened the set at four. Following a second kill from Cooper that tied the set at five, Air Force took the lead on the next point off of a service ace from King. Nevada tied the set at seven-all, but Air Force scored the next six points to go up 13-7. Juarez notched a pair of kills during the run, while Keith and Galloway teamed up for a pair of blocks. Cooper and Ssozi each tallied a pair of scores, as the Falcons maintained a six-point advantage (20-14). Keith (kill), Galloway (ace) and Cooper (kill) put down the final three points, as Air Force took the opening set by a 25-16 margin.
Nevada took an early 4-1 lead to start the second set, but a pair of scores from Galloway (kill, ace) tied the set at four. Cooper notched a pair of kills to give Air Force the lead (6-5, 8-7), while four kills from Ssozi helped Air Force even the set at 12. The squads traded the next several points, with Ahlers (14), Keith (15) and Juarez (16) accounting for set-tying scores. The Wolfpack scored four of the next five points to take a three-point lead (20-17), before a kill and solo block from Galloway pulled Air Force back within one (20-21). Air Force held Nevada at set-point (20-24), while kills from Keith (two) and Galloway (one) allowed the Falcons to tie the set at 24. However, the Wolfpack earned the final two points to take the 26-24 win and even the match at one-set apiece.
The Wolfpack took the quick 5-2 lead in the third, but back-to-back blocks from Cooper (one with Juarez, one with Ssozi) helped Air Force tie the set at five and an ace from Juarez gave the Falcons the lead on the next point (6-5). Nevada evened the set at nine, but Air Force collected kills from Ssozi, Juarez, Keith and Cooper during a 5-1 run that ended with a four-point lead (14-10) for the Falcons. An ace by junior Jordan Daniels pushed Air Force's lead to five (16-11), but Nevada responded with seven of the next eight points to take the lead at 18-17. A solo block by Ssozi halted the run at 18, while the senior added a set-tying kill at 19-all. A service ace from Juarez broke a 20-20 tie, but a 3-1 run by the Wolfpack gave then a 23-22 lead. Freshman Sarah Markwardt, who evened the set for the Falcons at 23 after Nevada was unable to handle her attack, teamed up with Cooper for a block and put down a kill to give Air Force the 26-24 win.

Air Force remains on the road this Saturday (Oct. 12), when it travels to San Jose State for a 2:00 p.m. (PT) conference matchup at Spartan Gym.
