Air Force travels to Troyer Tournament

Air Force will face Navy on Friday, Oct. 4, at 11 am PT in Pomona, Calif.
This Week: Air Force (7-8 overall) travels to Pomona, Calif., for the annual Gary Troyer Tournament, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. Friday-Saturday, Oct. 4-5. On Friday, Oct. 4, the Falcons will face Navy (7-5) at 11:00 am PT and No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer (7-4) at 3:00 pm PT at Pomona's Halderman Pool. On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Falcons will face Occidental (0-4) at 10:20 am PT and No. 20 Whittier (5-7) at 5:00 pm PT at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Axelrod Pool.
The Series: Air Force holds a 25-4 lead in the series against Pomona-Pitzer. The Falcons defeated the Sagehens, 14-11, last season. Air Force holds a 1-0 lead in the series against Occidental. Earlier this season, Air Force defeated the Tigers, 18-8, at the Inland Empire Invitational. Air Force holds a 15-2 lead in the series against Whittier. The teams last met in 2015, a 13-9 Air Force win over the Poets.
Facing the Mids: Air Force and Navy will meet for the 33rd time in the history of the service academy rivalry and the Mids hold a 22-10 lead in the series that began in 1980. Air Force won three straight from 2015-17. Navy won last season's only meeting, 11-9, at the Princeton Invitational.
Last Weekend: Air Force dropped four games to Top 20 teams at the SoCal Invitational, Sept. 27-29, in Los Angeles. In the first game, the Falcons fell to third-ranked Stanford, 18-1. On day two, ninth-ranked UC Davis defeated the Falcons, 16-9, while 14th-ranked Princeton, held off the Falcons, 12-10. Against UCD, Air Force cut the deficit to 7-6 in the third quarter, but the Aggies scored the next five. Mike Miller had three goals while Sam Fuller had two. Reagan Pittman, the national leader in assists, had six helpers in the game. Miller, the national leader in sprint wins, was a perfect 3-for-3. Anthony Tolbert made seven saves. Princeton held a 12-7 advantage at the half. Air Force scored the last three goals of the game. Gavin Jones had a career-high five goals in the game while Miller had three. Henry Yavitt had three assists against the Tigers. Miller won three more sprints for a total of six on the day. In the final game of the tournament, 20th-ranked San Jose State held off a late Falcon rally for a 10-8 win. SJSU led 10-5 in the fourth. The Falcons rallied for three goals in the final three minutes. Campbell Harris and Corey Tanis each scored twice for the Falcons. Anthony Tolbert made six saves and Mike Miller won all four sprints.
The Helping Hand: Senior Reagan Pittman leads the nation with 40 assists this season. Pittman also ranks third in the conference with 47 points. He has two or more assists in nine of the 15 games this season, including a career-best six against La Verne, Chapman and UC Davis. In the win over Brown, he had a career-high four goals. Pittman also leads the team with 17 steals and seven field blocks this season.
The Water Cheetah: Senior Mike Miller's speed has gained Air Force the first possession more times than not. Miller leads the nation with 44 sprint victories this season. Miller is 44-8 in sprints this season, and his .846 winning percentage is the best in the conference (among players who have more than seven sprints). Miller is also fourth in the league in goals scored with 30, including a career-high six in the win over Chapman.
Between the Pipes: Both junior James Burke and sophomore Anthony Tolbert have seen action between the pipes this season. Burke leads the team with five wins this season. Tolbert has won two games and leads the team, and ranks fourth in the conference, with 102 saves. He made a season-high 12 saves against No. 8 Long Beach State, Sept. 22.
