
Falcons drop a pair at Troyer Tournament

Air Force returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, against Caltech and Whittier
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – A pair of rallies fell short as the Air Force water polo team dropped a two games on the first day of the Troyer Tournament, Friday, Oct. 4, in Pomona, Calif.
In the first game, the Falcons dug an early hole, battled back to tie the game late, before falling to Navy, 13-12. Campbell Harris scored the first goal of the game, but Navy netted the next four. Grant Snyder and Mike Miller scored on five-meter shots late in the first quarter as the Falcons trailed 4-3. Navy then scored four straight goals early in the second for an 8-3 advantage. Sam Fuller scored at 3:59 and Miller buried another penalty shot as the Falcons trailed, 8-5 at the half.
Luke Andres and Gavin Jones scored early in the third to get within a goal of the Mids. However, Navy scored the next three and had an 11-7 lead early in the fourth. Jason Hires scored at 4:47, but Navy answered and had a 12-8 lead with 4:25 left. The Falcons then scored the next four goals to tie the game with just over a minute left. Jones scored at 4:02, Harris at 3:21, Miller at 2:14 and Hires at 1:13. Navy netted the game-winner with 59 seconds left. Miller led the Falcons with three goals while Harris, Jones and Hires each had two. Anthony Tolbert made nine saves and Miller won all four sprints.
In the second game of the day, the Falcons fell behind early and a rally short as No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer won, 11-8. Pomona scored the first four goals of the game, before the Falcons scored three straight as Fuller, Andres and Miller all scored. The Sagehens scored late in the first, and then added the only two goals of the second, for a 7-3 lead at the half. Miller scored twice in the third and Harris added a goal as the Falcons trailed 9-6 entering the fourth. Harris scored early in the fourth and Snyder netted one with eight seconds left to make up the final margin.
Air Force (7-10) continues action in the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 5, against Caltech at 1 pm PT and Whittier at 5 pm PT.
