LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Air Force volleyball team suffered a 3-1 conference setback to UNLV this evening (Oct. 24) at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. The Falcons split the opening two sets with the host Rebels (23-25, 25-22), but fell 16-25, 19-25 in the final two frames, to fall to 4-5 in Mountain West action.
Â
Junior Cambria Galloway and sophomore Bailey Keith tallied 10 kills apiece to combine for 20 of the squad's 39 kills, with Galloway hitting at a match-high clip of .421 (10k-3e-17a). The junior also tied with sophomore Vittoria Juarez for a team-leading two blocks. Junior Alex King led the team in digs with 13, while classmate Andi Ahlers notched her 10th double-double of the season with 28 assists and 11 digs. Junior Jordan Daniels and freshman Sarah Markwardt each recorded a pair of service aces to round out the squad's statistical leaders.
Â
A pair of kills from Keith, as well as a score from Galloway, helped Air Force jump out to a fast 4-1 lead in the opening minutes of the match, but UNLV responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points to take the 9-6 advantage. Air Force evened the set at 10 off of a kill from senior Denise Ssozi, while a strike from Keith and three-straight attacking errors by the Rebels helped Air Force retake the lead and push its advantage to four (14-10). UNLV used another scoring stretch to tie the set at 17, before a sophomore Vittoria Juarez stopped their run with a kill. Ssozi put down a kill and teamed up with Galloway for a block at the 22-18 mark, but the Rebels closed on a 7-2 run to take the opening set by a narrow 25-23 margin.
Â
Galloway and Juarez opened the second set with a block, but the Rebels responded with the next three points to take the early 3-1 lead. Kills from Keith (2-3, 8-9) and Galloway (5-6) kept Air Force within one, while freshman Taleah Cooper put down a kill to stop a Rebel run and spark a four-point swing by the Falcons that evened the set at 14. UNLV tallied six of the next eight points to go up by a 16-20 margin, but Keith and Galloway tallied kills on back-to-back kills to halt the run. After benefitting from a pair of errors by the Rebels, Cooper and Juarez teamed up for a block that tied the set at 21-all. Keith put down a kill two plays later that evened the score at 22, while a pivotal challenge by head coach Keith Barnett reversed a call and gave Air Force its first lead (23-22) since the opening point of the set. Juarez secured the win for Air Force, as she recorded a pair of strikes on back-to-back plays to give Air Force the 25-22 win.
Â
The Rebels rolled through the opening minutes of the third set, scoring the first six points and jumping out to a fast 10-3 lead. Ssozi collected a pair of kills, while two scores from Keith bookended a service ace by Markwardt at the 8-14 mark. UNLV pushed its advantage to 10 at the 19-9 mark, before Air Force tallied three-straight points off of a block by Keith and junior Mackenzie Robertson, a kill by Juarez and a service ace by Daniels. Ssozi added two more scores, but the Rebels took the set by a 25-16 score.
Â
Galloway and Keith accounted for two of the fourth set's first three points, while a strike by Cooper evened the set at five. UNLV scored four of the next five points to take the 9-6 lead, before Galloway (kill at 7-9) and Markwardt (ace at 9-11) kept Air Force within two. A pair of strikes by Juarez and another ace by Daniels tied the set at 14 and the two teams traded the next several points. A pair of UNLV serving errors and a Markwardt kill kept the Falcons within one at the 18-19 mark, but the Rebels scored six of the final seven points to defeat the Falcons by a 25-19 mark.
