USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force football team used a potent rushing attack and a stifling defense to run away with a commanding 31-7 victory over Utah State, Saturday evening, Oct. 26, at Falcon Stadium. Air Force (6-2, 4-1 MW) is now bowl eligible for the first time since 2016.
The Falcons out-gained the Aggies (4-3, 3-1 MW) by a 472-128 margin, including a whopping 448-14 on the ground. In addition, the Falcons held USU to just 44 total yards in the whole first half. Air Force also dominated the time of possession to the tune of 45:43 to 14:17. The 448 rushing yards, TOP and 30 first downs are all season-highs for the Falcons.
Leading the rushing offense was sophomore Timothy Jackson, who finished with a career-high 148 yards on 25 carries and a score. He had 120 of those in the first half alone. It was his third straight game of 100+ rushing yards, making him the first AF player to do that since Cody Getz in 2012.
Also getting in on the scoring was junior Kadin Remsberg, who scored a game-high two touchdowns, while finishing with 92 yards on 16 carries. The fourth TD came courtesy of senior Taven Birdow, who had 88 yards on 18 carries.
The defense was led by junior linebacker Demonte Meeks, who had a team-high eight tackles, four solo, as well as half a sack. Senior Mosese Fifita also had a sack, his first solo of the season.
The first quarter was a defensive struggle, as a pair of AF fumbles killed any momentum on offense, but the defense held the Aggies to just nine total yards , keeping it a 0-0 game after the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter started with the Falcons controlling the ball on USU's 37 yard line. Six rushes later, T. Jackson punched it in from one yard out to break the ice and put AF up, 7-0, with 12 minutes to halftime. Following a three and out on Utah State's next drive, the AF offense went back to work.
AF's drive kicked off with a 16-yard pass to reach USU territory. From there, five rushes, including a 20-yard scamper from T. Jackson to help him eclipse the 100-yard mark, set AF up at the one yard line. This time it was Remsberg who ran the ball in, doubling the Falcon lead, 14-0.
Following another quick possession from the Aggies, AF took over on their own 16 with five minutes to go until the half. Four first downs later, the Falcons set up shop on the Utah State 35. The drive stalled from there, setting up a 57-yard try from senior kicker Jake Koehnke, and he drilled it, giving AF the 17-0 lead into the locker room. The 57 yarder was a new career-high from Koehnke, and tied as the sixth-longest FG in program history.
Utah State came out firing in the second half, scoring on their opening possession by going 75 yards in nine plays for the Aggies first points, 17-7. After a pair of empty possessions, Air Force was set up with excellent field position on Utah State's 41. Eight plays later, Remsberg took it in again, this time from nine yards out, to get the lead back to 17 points, 24-7, headed to the final stanza.
To start the fourth quarter, AF had the ball on their own 40, and steadily drove down the field in nine plays, leading to the fourth rushing touchdown of the evening, this one from Birdow, to give AF its biggest lead of the game, 31-7 with 10 minutes to play. From there, Air Force was effectively able to melt the clock to seal the win.
Air Force will be back in action at Falcon Stadium next Saturday, Nov. 2, when they host service academy rival Army West Point. Kickoff against the Black Knights is set for 1:30 p.m. MT.
