Air Force got goals from three different players
All in all, it was a controlling game from Air Force, as they out-shot the Cowgirls (4-4-3, 1-2 MW) 19-10, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. They also out-possessed Wyoming, 55 percent to 45 percent, including a 61 percent time in the offensive zone. This led to a 7-1 corner kick advantage for the Falcons.
There were three goal scorers for the Falcons on the day, all unassisted. The first came on a penalty kick from junior Emma Nelson, her second goal of the year. The second came off the foot of junior Jillian Jamero, as a free ball off a free kick found her foot for her fourth tally. Finally, the third was from none other than freshman Lexi Romero, as she broke away in the closing minutes for the necessary insurance goal. It was her team-leading ninth of the season.
In net, junior Danielle Katz had only allowed one goal before Wyoming scored with two seconds to play on a long desperation ball. In total, she faced 10 shots and made two saves.
The game went without a goal in the first 25 minutes of play, despite a handful of opportunities on both sides. Air Force got a golden opportunity in the 25th minute, as a foul in the box led to a penalty kick, which was taken by Nelson. The junior buried it right below the crossbar to open the scoring.
AF didn't need much more time before goal number two, as on a set piece from the Falcons, the ball was sent into the box, where after it bounced around a little, it found the waiting feet of Jamero, who buried it on the right side for the goal, extending the lead to 2-0, a score which held into the break.
Out of the half, Wyoming began to pick up the pace offensively, as they kept the ball in the offensive zone. That led to a goal in the 51st minute to cut the lead to one. From there, The Falcons' defense was able to keep Wyoming from getting many good opportunities, as they looked to hold on.
Some much needed insurance came in the 86th minute, as Romero dribbled all the way in, and beat the keeper for her ninth goal of the season, making it 3-1. It turned out to be crucial, as Wyoming sent in a ball in the final seconds of the game, and it hit the crossbar and went in to make it 3-2, but it was too little too late as AF held on.
The Falcons will return to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 6, when they welcome in in-state rival Colorado State. Kick off against the Rams at Cadet Soccer Stadium is set for noon MT.
