Air Force had two shots miss off the crossbar
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team fell just short in a tough 1-0 defeat to Colorado State, Sunday afternoon, Oct. 6, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons (7-3-1, 2-2 MW) had two shots go off the crossbar in the game, but couldn't find the equalizer.
The game was a close defensive battle, as both teams had eight shots, just three of those total on net. Corner kicks finished 3-2 in favor of AF, while the possession battle was 53-47 percent in favor of the Rams (7-4-1, 2-2 MW).
Junior Emma Nelson had two of the shots, while sophomore Natalia Gutierrez had the lone attempt on net in a two shot game. In goal, junior Danielle Katz had two saves, while the lone goal allowed was on a quick restart on a free kick.
The first half saw the Falcons struggle to keep possession of the ball, but both defenses held firm as AF only out-shot SU, 4-3. On a foul just outside the box in the 42nd minute, CSU was set up with a perfect opportunity and they capitalized, passing the ball into the box and getting a goal to lead it 1-0 into halftime.
The second half was equally as tough defensively, as the Rams registered five more shots to AF's four. The first and only shot on goal for AF came in the 86th minute, while they got a header that went off the post in the final minute, but neither opportunity found twine, settling the Falcons with the tough 1-0 defeat.
Air Force returns to the pitch next weekend, Friday, Oct. 11 when they face UNLV in a road MW Conference contest. Kickoff against the Rebels is set for 6 p.m. MT.
