Air Force women's soccer earned a hard-fought 2-1 overtime win on the road at UNLV in Mountain West action Friday night at Johann Memorial Field. Freshman Lexi Romero's goal in the 96th minute lifted the Falcons to season record of 8-3-1 and a conference mark of 3-2.
Romero struck for her 10th goal of the season at the 96:01 mark, becoming the first Falcon to reach double-digit goals in a season since Stephanie Rader in 1997. It is the most goals scored in a season in the Mountain West era by a Falcon.
The win vaulted Air Force to its eighth win of the season, the most since 2010. The Falcons also posted its third straight road win and remain unbeaten in four road contests so far this season.
Air Force struck early with a goal in the 22nd minute by junior Jillian Jamero. Jamero scored off a pass from junior Emma Nelson to put the Falcons up early.
UNLV (3-10, 0-5 MW) was able to tie it up right before halftime with a score in the 41st minute by Lourdes Bosch.
The two teams played a scoreless second half to head to overtime.
The team shots were nearly identical, as UNLV held a 16-15 advantage in overall shots. Air Force held a 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Junior Danielle Katz earned the win in goal for the Falcons, tallying six saves on the night.
"Tonight was a battle against a very good UNLV team," head coach Larry Friend said. "Our cadets showed a lot of character on the field. At times, we struggled to keep the ball and play, but I was proud of them because they found a way to win."
Air Force looks to keep things rolling this weekend with its second road contest in the Silver State, Sunday, Oct. 13, at Nevada.
