FORT WORTH, Texas - Air Force men's basketball dropped a 65-54 contest at TCU Monday night at Schollmaier Arena. The Falcons are now 2-2 on the season.
In a game against a former conference rival, the Falcons had the Horned Frogs on the ropes late, but were never able to take the lead. Trailing by as many as 14 points, Air Force rallied back to make it a one point game with 7:45 to play. But a 9-0 run (3-0) helped put the game away for TCU.
The Falcons trailed 39-28 at the half as leading scorer Lavelle Scottie played just eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. TCU took a 14 point lead right before the half, but Caleb Morris nailed a half-court shot as time expired to pull Air Force to within 11 at the break.
Down 12 early in the second half, the Falcons got back in the game with a 9-0 run to pull to within three at 48-45 with 12:52 to play. The Falcons hung tough with the Frogs over the next few minutes of play and got to within a point on a driving layup by LeSean Brown with just under eight minutes to play.
Ryan Swan led the Falcons with nine points and a career-high five assists. Sid Tomes, AJ Walker and Caleb Morris added eight points each. Both Morris and Tomes hit two three's each. Scottie, playing in front of family and friends in his home town of Forth Worth, scored seven points--all in the second half--and added five rebounds.
Kevin Samuel recorded a double-double with game-high's of 19 points and 11 rebounds for TCU. The Falcons did a good job of avoiding Samuel in the paint, allowing just one shot to get blocked by the center. Samuel entered the game with 10 blocked shots in the first two games for TCU.
The Falcons played the Horned Frogs for the first time since 2012. TCU, now in the Big 12 conference, was a Mountain West rival from 2005-2012.
Air Force returns to action Thursday, taking on Loyola Marymount at the Bimini Jam in Bimini, Bahamas. Tip time is 4 pm ET.
